You've been shortchanging yourself - 0.4 of an hour is 24 minutes...

Heh, I've just posted a very similar question here:
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7276542

I've since found this page:
http://www.workingtoday.com.au/workhours1.html
which throws some light on the situation - can't see any mention of accumulated/rostered day in my contract though!

Depends on your contract really.

In Canada my husband worked for a contractor and was paid by the hour. Normally averaged about 60-70 hours per week, paid by the hour.

Here in Australia my husband has a mining engineering job in Brisbane. He's on salary and gets paid by the month. He only works 37.5 hours per week and has never been asked or expected to stay any longer. And in case you're wondering he does get paid very well, fairly comparable to Perth standards actually.

Oh, and his 37.5 hours a week is Monday to Friday from about 7:30 to 4pm although a lot of people skip out at 3pm on Fridays. Work is a bit flexible though and he could arrive a bit later and stay later if he wanted. But he's picked those hours because of the bus schedule.

38 hours is what you get paid for. Actual working hours is probably 8am-7pm
If you get behind ie go on holiday you can catch up over a few Sat am?

9am - 5pm (30min lunch) = 7.5 hours per day x 5 days per week = 37.5

I'd suspect it was Legal or Accounting industry. Both are notorious for only recognising and promoting those who are 'seen' to be commited to 'the firm'. Interestingly enough juniors in these positions are usualy VERY low paid my sister-in-law calculated that in her first three years working for KPMG she would have been better paid working a 40hr week at KFC than she would doing her 80+ hrs that were expected in Accountancy (for a contracted 38hr wk).

Another area would be teaching where marking and lesson prep to be done properly have to be done out of regular hours. (Having said that its tough to feel any sympathy for people who get 12 weeks paid holiday each year! :p)

The justification in the professions would be that once your efforts have been recognised that caree progression and promotion should make life more rewarding. This is of course utter bollox and if it ever applied surely only referred to the 'top of the tree' performers in any corporate environment. As this mentality has crept down to the lower-paid minions of society we're now all being raped by our corporate over-lords...

Interesting, I recall during my time in the City at my old shipbroking employers. The brokers were on call 24/7, however that seemed to be more by choice, as they received a pct of the fee that arose from any fixing of a ship. This was throughout the 70's and I'm not sure that it's the best example.

There is another thread on the boards about retail places closing early. I was the sole attendant at a Club X shop here in Brunswick, (did it part-time on weekends whilst working at the Gas and Fuel) I was required to lock up the shop at 3am. I only got paid from 6pm till 3am. After that there was cashing up and cleaning, no pay arose from the hours worked after the door shut. I used to close around 5 mins early as often as possible, and even earlier on a quiet night.

My wife does 7 hrs and 36 minutes each day, that adds up to 38 hours per week.

Anything after that is either overtime (if she is asked to work extra) or it becomes flex time (if she just does it without being asked)

Amazulu is in Mining Engineering, but I'm not sure if he's referring to all types (as indicated) or just his area. Perhaps he will elaborate a bit more when he sees your message.

We work a 38 hour week, and are suppposed to do 7.6 hours a day. We can take as long or as little for lunch as we like (within reason), so long as we do 76 hours a fortnight (as we get paid fortnightly), that's fine.

Currently Im do 37.5 hours a week and am on flexitime. Im also on call one week in three for which you get paid peanuts (unless actually called out)

For some jobs - you work 8 hour days and you get a rostered day off every 4 weeks (where you get paid).
My new job has the above arrangement, which should be great! and no on call! even better! (both these jobs are govt, one south Australia new one NSW)
