Angry "Fresh fish" does it exist in Perth

I am having real trouble locating "fresh fish" in the Perth area. I know all the supermarkets sell it, but its not "fresh". Some of the supermarket fish simply sits there for a couple of weeks, until its an off white colour then goes on special. I have had so many dickie tummies off supermarket fish, that I dont buy it anymore. I have found Seafresh in Innaloo and Claremont, but was wondering is there a fish market anywhere where it actually comes in fresh off the boats. I have to say the fish has been a major disappointment to me since arriving 8 months ago.

Some delis have it too, but again in many cases it has been sat there for days. Several Aussies I have spoken to, say they have thrown loads of fish away after one taste, and its just part of living in Aus. Comes as a bit of a surprise though, especially when I thought this was a fish nation, and there would be fish markets everywhere.

Best place for fresh fish is the Kailis shop in Leederville, it's like a "Palace of fish". There's a good fresh fish shop in Inalloo and at the weekends the caravan by the UWA as you're heading towards Freo on Stirling Highway is supposed to be good too.

I had some beautiful baldchin groper and squid rings from Kailis last week, yum!

Canning Vale fish market on Saturdays - had my first visit there this weekend, the Salmon looked particularly tempting and good value

My wife had exactly the same problem when we moved up to Brisbane from Sydney, she is a real "seafood" person, and couldn't find any good stuff. She was all for returning to Sydney for the first few months !!

But after asking around, basically doing what you are doing, she found the "right" places to buy it.

Good luck

Thanks for that, I have been to the Seafresh at Innaloo, and it is excellent, but a bit of a drive for us. I will certainly try Leederville, probably this afternoon.

Its still very disappointing that in a country where 95% of the population live on the coast, that its almost impossible to buy what everyone in the UK and probably other parts of the worls too, take for granted. I am not one of these pommie whingers, but after 8 months here, the rose tinted spectacles have been placed well and truely in the wheelie bin. Australia has many fantastic points that the UK will never match, but when it comes to fresh fish, and basically food in general, Australia is absolutely miles behind.

I can't speak for your little corner of Perth, but where I am the fresh food is fantastic. The fruit and vegetables are top-quality (never see a bruised banana or floppy lettuce), the meat is good and cheap and the fish has a range and quality that I've only ever seen matched in France.

I would say that perhaps you shouldn't rely on doing all your shopping in supermarkets. I wouldn't dream of buying fish or seafood from the supermarket (sure they sell it - but it doesn't mean you have to buy it there, everyone knows it's frozen). I also rarely buy vegetables from the supermarket either - but who in their right mind would, when you compare the quality of most supermarket vegies with the ones in the specialist fruit and vegetable stores?

Next day the fish is available at Sydney fish markets. Loads of WA lobsters there. Even in the NT and QLD the Barra went down to Sydney and back again.

"Thawed, for your convenience" don't you just love it?

Wanneroo markets have good produce.

If you are in Fremantle, they have fresh fish at the market and Sealanes too http://www.sealanes.com.au/seafoodmarket/

the market also sells fresh fruit & veg too, if you are further up north we have a fab fish & chip shop which also sells fresh fish too and he gives great advice on cooking it aswell. You need to investigate, forget the supermarkets and you will find some fab fresh fruit/veg, meat/fish and whatever else you are looking for in Perth/Fremantle

Hi,

Yes I'll second that Swift, if you are in the North there is a great fish and chip shop which sells fresh fish too. We got our live cray fish there Christmas Eve for our Christmas lunch. The guy there is really nice - my partner is a chef by trade so we actually took these live crays home. The customers thought we were nuts when we were fishing them out of the tank into a box. Definitely worth a bit of a drive if you are up this way. My partner felt the same about this 'thawed for your convenience' thing, couldn't believe the difficulty in finding 'fresh' fish, we had some prawns from Woolies once and they went straight in the bin when we got them home, they never even saw the outside of the bag!

It's just before Butler - all the way to near the end of Marmion Avenue - it's on the corner of Hughie Edwards Drive next to the Gull (I think) petrol station.
