Fostering Dogs
We have decided to become foster carers for abandoned dogs and were approved yesterday. Its very heart wrenching but if anyone else has thought about doing this then please look at this web site specifically the urgent homes needed it will help you decide.
Strays/abandoned dogs are taken to the pound where they only have a week to be reclaimed or they are put to sleep, resuce groups scourer the pounds everyday to try to save as many as possible the RSPCA are limited to the amount they can save and other groups usually rely on foster carers to provide homes until forever homes are found. You only take the dogs you want to. You provide food and love the vets bills are covered by the group normally.
Anyway this is an oz wide issue so anyone anywhere.
We are getting a 8 week old deaf greyhound in 2 weeks which we are hoping to adopt as long as it gets on with our dog and cat. Greyhounds being one of the hardest dogs to foster if you have a cat, but also one of the best family dogs to get if you dont.

Forgot to say, this is also a great way if you are thinking of getting a dog to see if it fits into you famaily or if you want a forever dog there are some great web sites for rescuing dogs and the benefit of them rather than RSPCA is that you usually have a refundable 3 week trial period to see if they suit.
Some good site for NSW are

Re: Fostering Dogs
How nice of you to do that! We actually just adopted a dog from the RSPCA - we got 4 weeks trial (as if we'd ever give him back though!) and 4 weeks pet insurance.
Good luck with your fostering!

Re: Fostering Dogs
Good work Jo, we have fostered 2 dogs up here in Brisbane for Save A Pound Dog & we will get another one soon, just empty right now because we have been on holidays. We have also adopted a dog through DOL, you can see him in the photo section near the end of the kelpie pics thread, have sent you a PM, say hi if you see me over there .
BTW, it depends on the rescue, but some even provide the food as well (ours does).

Top post OH is desperate to get a rescue greyhound as soon as we can. I'd be interested to know what the deal is with them & cats? PM if you can or I'll no doubt be doing my own research in the future.
Other posters have also said having a dog is a good way to get into the community as you can chat to other dog owners etc

We have a cat which moved in with us when she was a kitten (just turned up one day at the house) (we live in the country). Dogs and cats get on fine, but cat definately has the upper hand. Westie won't let other dog eat out of his bowl, but cat gets away with it.
