This Forum.. More Negative than Positive!?
Whilst I have found this forum very helpful with things that I needed to know before moving to Australia.... I found quite a lot of the threads that I have read have put a lot of doubt into my head about moving over there.
I have been offered a job in Melbourne and will be travelling over with my wife(no kids, we are still quite young), on a 457 Visa (application has gone). The job is permanent but the visa is not. I have read too many negative things about this Visa and now the seeds of soubt have been sewn in my head about what will happen when I get there. The other negative is my wife will want to work and a lot of people are stating that on a temp visa most Oz
employers will not entertain a spouse for employment and therefore will not be easy finding work. Initially when I was offered the job in OZ I was over the moon but the more I have looked into this way of going and the more I read threads on here I am not overly filled with confidence.
Although on the other hand it is better to know the facts and I will give it a go as all may work out perfect and will probably regret not giving it a bash.
Am I reading too much into things and should not worry as it is still an exciting opportunity to live and work in great city.
Any comments appreciated!!

Have you had a visit there and got a feel for it?
I ask this because for our family..to move to WA, we are taking some risks and making some sacrifices and i had some niggles about whether it was worth the risks.
My hubby has never been in any doubt and felt no need to 'suss' things out beforehand but i didn't share the same confidence,so my kind husband suggested i took a trip and then i could get a feel of the area we were aiming for and i would beable to imagine better if we could live there and was it worth the risks/sacrifices.
I went in Nov and having been i can defitnatly say it is worth it for us.
I also sat one night in front of my telly at home here in the u.k. one night and imagined myself 60years old having decided 'not' to go and realised i would always regret not 'going for it' and wondered what life would have turned out to be.
This of course, is our experience and it's horses for courses but you have a great advantage of your youth and no children yet.
You'll benefit from a trip i'm sure.
Someone years ago told me that when you are making big decisions..
"listen to your gut feeling is saying more than your head"
This is because your head tends to focus on circumstances and can be easily put off.
Hope this helps,
Lynn

Most people coming to Australia take a gamble. The job / culture situation is very different and you wont know how you feel about it all till you get here. Your uncertainties are not unique to you, it's quite normal to be "up for it" one minute and thinking you're bonkers the next. These are normal, risk type emotions.
For what it's worth, my view is that whilst you and your wife are young, have no kids, nows the time to establish yourselves and if you can't take a gamble now, then when can you? Australia is a vibrant new country and there are plenty of opportunities if you are prepared to work hard.
At the end of the day, if Aus turns out not to be for you then you go back. Simple. OK....it's going to cost, but if you don't give it a try you'll never know.
It's a risk, but it's not life threatening. Your choice
[Good luck with whatever you decide!]

My husband's company are going to support and pay for our PR visa but we have decided to make use of LAFHA for the first 18 months because we are not sure where we want to settle full time.
Have your company agreed to sponsor an application for PR for you or do you not want that?

Hi Vanessa
How are you finding Melbourne as a place to live?
Well the company I am going to work for said that they will sponser me for PR,
but I doubt that I would want to apply straight away until I decided that its what I want. maybe give it a year and then decide. I think I am having one of them days where I am looking too much into the 457 visa, that when I get there everyone in Australia will not be helpful or will say no to everything because I am on this Visa.

Thanks for that Michelle. Feeling a bit more confident now that I can speak to people who are in the same boat and things have worked out OK

Re: This Forum.. More Negative than Positive!?
Hi, I'm joining this thread as we are in a similar situation - we will be going out on the temporary 444/461 visas - these are extraordinary as they are valid for 5 years but can be renewed again and again, assuming your circumstances don't change majorly. But they never lead to PR or citizenship.
So we will be out there on perpetual temporary residency!!!!
Planning on Melbourne or Brisbane, depending on jobs, so would be very interested to hear how other TR visa holders get on with employment.
Cheers
Buzzy

Re: This Forum.. More Negative than Positive!?
Been in Brisbane since November 2003, on a spouse visa which is due to become permanent soon - I got a job within 3 weeks, and have been employed constantly ever since. I've moved jobs 4 times, through my own choice, and even though my current contract says "temporary" its with the govt, and their temp contract can last years.
Some employers won't take you on when you are on a temp visa, butthere are plenty who will.
As for the positive/negative thing, I think many posts on here should be described as "realistic" rather than "negative" - its not that people are trying to post "bad" experiences, more that they are posting "real" ones.

Re: This Forum.. More Negative than Positive!?
we came on a 457 sponsored by my employer.
My husband could work and had no restrictions while I (as sponseree) had to keep working in the same job for the same employer.
Mr P worked at temp contracts and never had a problem- we opted for temping so we could take holidays when we wanted.
And Melbourne is a fab city- probably not to everyone's liking but I came here from London and could never go back to permanently living in London after experiencing Melb!

I cant talk about the specific visa you are on but like Polly I came out on a temporary spouses visa and again I found work quite easily (in fact I got offered 2 permanent full time jobs in 2 days) so there are jobs out there for spouses on a temp visa.
You will get negative posts, as well as many positive threads, on the forum but I thought I had to come over and at least give it a try (you can always head home if its not for you) I know that somedays I could walk to the airport and head home but most of the time im happy with what we have here.
Whatever you decide I wish you all the best

Re: This Forum.. More Negative than Positive!?
As a dual-national our family didn't have to jump through as many hoops as those coming here on a work-based visa. However I would like to pick up on your thread title. I think the issue here is that when things go badly people come to BE to vent a bit, get some support, a "we know how you're feeling" reply or two and generally get access to the kind of support network that many have given up by dint of moving 12000 miles around the planet.
People do occasionally post when things are going well, particularly when a milestone such as a year of residency comes up, but on the whole if it's going well, you simply don't need BE as much. You do get the "what a nice day I had" posts (such a Renth's recent one about swimming with dolphins), but if your nice day consisted of a fairly normal trip to the beach, a bit of light recreational shopping and a nice meal, it doesn't exactly make for rivetting reading and there's no great urge to post about it.
So I guess the site is slightly unbalanced in that respect, but I don't think for a second it's indicative of the lives people actually lead in Oz, the vast majority of which are happy and successful.

The ones who are now happy living the life, are doing just that, and are not on the forums much.
Has anyone counted just how many people post on this Australian section ?
(No, I am not going to count )
