Default Forget what I said about Nationwide cards!

I have - together with others - recommended using a Nationwide credit card abroad, since they don't charge an extra currency amount.

That's about to change:

Luckily I only use mine when back in the UK.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I hear the Post Office now do a credit card with no fee for overseas purchases.
Wonder how long that will last now!

I notice that the link appears to state that the 1% will be "wrapped up" in the sterling amount charged so unless one is "in the know" about it, account holders would be none the wiser.

Thanks for making it known!

Oh yes, none of the cards show it as an extra: it appears as a degraded exchange rate.

This may be useful, the Visa Website has a daily conversion update so you can know the sterling conversion price with some confidence:

http://www.corporate.visa.com/pd/con...jsp?src=ex_rez

just enter the 0.84% fee and click away.

I took out a Post Office credit card a few months ago because I had a few overseas trips booked - they don't charge a fee for overseas transactions (withdrawals are probably excepted).

I also work for the Post Office so I got an extended 0% on purchases and balance transfers - but you still get 3 months and 12 months respectively which isn't bad.

Like another poster said, however, how long is this going to last if the Nationwide have withdrawn their 0% on overseas transactions? Also, there is currently no option for paying your bill online, it's pretty much just branch or post, so I'll have to stop using mine when I go over to Oz on a WHV.

It would seem that the charge will be 1% which is still better than most cards charging 2.5%. However if you are correct about Nationwide not renewing cards for overseas addresses it will become irrelevant for most.

That particular issue - N/W not renewing cards overseas - was "resolved" but I have no idea how! They first sent an email saying that since it had expired and I lived outside the UK it would not be renewed. Then, later, a girl on the phone line said it *could* be - and it had already been dispatched! It never arrived, and I rang again - they sent another, which I now have.

All in all, they have become a disappointment and when the latest one expires I won't renew it. They will probably then send a new one every few days....

Had planned to use nationwide to bring over cash I can't get my hands on prior to move. Will need to rethink now

Maybe you should not be too hasty about dumping N/W. A I read it they will charge 1%. I remember other banks charging 2.5%. The other thing I like about N/W is you get something close to the interbank rate which is again better than a lot give you.

You don't have to use it, but it does give extra options and costs you nothing if you don't

It is another kick in the teeth, but still better than a lot of others. Of course if I have got this wrong, please let me know.

You're right. The other bank loading is (was) 2.75% - a hefty wallop. I checked that and it *was* 2.75% on multiple purchases on Barclaycard.
