In a round about way you make a valid point not mentioned before - I still reckon the football is Championship level but the refereeing is Sunday league standard. Maybe they could bring over one or two European refs for a couple of years after retirement.

I'll be working or sleeping before work dammit.... Mind you I'd rather watch a competitive live game at whather level, especially if there is a crowd with some semblance of atmosphere, than something on the tv 12,000 miles away.

i'd agree with you normally and it'll have no atmosphere as the commentary team will be in a studio in the USA but I get to see our new players

IMO the A League is well worth watching. The Melbourne matches I've been to have had far more atmosphere than AFL and RL matches I've attended. I'm the first to admit that it's not Premiership standard and is nearer low end Championship / high end Div 1, but it's only in it's second season so will surely improve. Went to Telstra Dome last night, and had a great time. The attendance far exceeded my expectations and hopefully will see even more through the turnstiles at Olympic Park. The only down side was the maniac who threw the flare from the third tier to the bottom level. Hope nobody was hurt. Dread to think what the reaction will be in the Herald Sun letters page. "Don't get this sort of thing in AFL...etc".

Quite frankly AFL crowds wouldn't know what atmosphere is. I'm going again and will continue to go.... trouble is I can only go on a Friday or Saturday, and a lot of the games are on Sundays.

Come on Victory.... Lets lift the beautiful game together.

26 years It's been since I've been able to see half decent competitive football.... I'm so pleased this has happened one of the best things to happen in Aussie in my time here. Almost got tears in my eyes that at last I can go to the Football again.

Yeah it's great to actually be able to go to a proper game, even if the standard isn't that high. Us expats will never have the same love for Sydney Fc/Melbourne/Queensland Roar etc that we have for our teams back home, but at least it's a real game to go to, and it's helping me with my Aussie experience - I don't get Rugby League/Union or AFL you see

I ran into one of my workmates there yesterday. He is a Blackpool supportes. I'm pretty sure he was watching a better team last night than his own one at least.

Don't know if i will be able to goto any games. I have sorted myself out with a team in the Eastern Suburbs league. So i reckon i'll be playing rather than watching. But you never know!

As we're talking football.

Are there any Swindon Town supporters out there ? 6 out of 6 so far , Denis Wise is doing a great job.

Am planning on going to Perth early next year. Thank goodness Perth got rid of Steve McMahon ...he was terrible as a manager at Swindon, great player though

That's because the Herald Sun are one of the main sponsors of the AFL whereas The Age sponsors the Football

The fans are all pretty friendly its certainly not like a trip to Elland Road in the 80's or 90's.
Coming for a reccie in October(Townsville to Brisbane) then moving early 07,where about do the Roar play ?Cheers

The Roar play at Suncorp which is in Brisbane city centre with them being the Queensland Roar they may take a game on the road up north to Townsville but I wouldnt count on it. If you do end up north this is one of the areas that they are looking to expand to when a couple of new teams enter the comp in the next few years.

Well,

All sounds good to me - got to be on the up if they want to add a few new teams to the competition I'm used to non-premiership football so I'm looking forward to it at least.

Got to be better than Huddersfield this season - mid-table mediocrity here we come.
