Default Food Costs - 1 person 110 bucks

Haven't done this for 4 years so I was interested to know.

110 bucks for the week it was. Tins from Aldi. Meat and the balance from Safeway as the butcher was closed. Some of the meat will last 2 weeks and some other portions would feed a spouse too.

Frankly I could get it down to 70-80 but this diet is a modified high protein, high 'good' fat sports Mediterrean diet and does include variety and extras adding costs which a bloke on his own for a bit might be inclined to skip.

Includes TBone steaks, fresh chicken skinless breasts, exy peanuts, rolls, cottage cheese, salmon fillets, fresh ham, sausage, bacon, minced meat, feta cheese and goats cheese, a gallon of choc milk.

No biscuits, chips, processed, or 'packaged' foods, or puddings in sight.

cheers

B

Just got back from Woollies having spent $230. We are a family of 4 (2 teenagers) and my purchases are based on needs within our family and a love of a diverse diet. This includes skinless chicken breast, salmon and mince, plus toiletries & cleaning products. We don't eat much red meat, so trips to the butcher are rare.

I have a husband with osteoporosis , a daughter with osteopenia and a son with several allergies so I do buy things like Physical milk so can't buy economy stuff where others can. I've tried Aldi but for the same reasons really can't save much by going there. I will do a separate fruit and veg shop or two during the week which will add another $80 ish.

I pinch dishwasher tablets from work when I realised that the buggers quoted my salary for super but not for cleaning needs. (Edited to try to add a joke symbol but stuffed it up.)

This is for food only. And I would hazard a guess that food scales better, each additional person not adding an extra (in this case) 110 bucks a week and not everyone needing the specialist diet. But then people would buy exy carbs rather than exy protein.

I think the reality is that we all do specialist shops on a monthly or say 2 monthly basis where we get those toiletries/and or pantry needs. So really, we all need to quote seperately for those as the current per week stats get distorted we have to compare apples with apples. <groan>.

A male friend of mine who has recently split with his wife was bemoaning to me yesterday that now he has had to revert to doing his own shopping he can't believe how pricey it is. He's certainly not a lavish creature and he said he spent $220 for one week.

P.S. I should probably add he's a Kiwi who's been living here for 30 odd years so is not comparing to Uk prices and having a gripe.
