Re: Is food cheaper than Perth in the UK?
The only thing that I've noticed on the positive side of things here in Perth is that the vegetables are often bigger.
That's it.
Fish - much, much more expensive - and sometimes tastes dreadful
Meat - just as expensive and sometimes as tough as leather.
Fruit - overpriced.
Range of foods - better for Asian - everything else worse than the UK.
Overall costs - higher here.
Can't understand how anyone can justify that grocery shopping is more rewarding here. After two years I don't think it's a patch on the UK.
Some things related to food are better (i.e. takeaways and eating out) but grocery shopping is a continual disappointment.

Me too H, I had a takeway from the indian in Joondalup last week that everyone raved about (old man away couldn't be arsed cooking!) and it tasted like spicy tomato soup, it was rank.

eating out is such good value herecompared to the uk...for example last time we were home we took the folks out for an italian meal....for 4 adults, basically a starter to share think it was garlic bread or something, maybe one person had some ribs...then a main course each pasta/steak or something like that...came to the equivalent of $300!!! i nearly fell over! a chinese takeaway in the uk costs about 40quid!!! there is a great choice of restaurants to eat out in perth (if you have a babysitter!) and really good food if you know were to go!

Re: Is food cheaper than Perth in the UK?
depends on what food you want really....cheap and cheerful great italian bistro style, quick fast service
is Cafe Martino in Mt Lawley, homemade pizza and pasta and only $10 midweek, there is a really cheap indian over the road from The queens in mt lawley which i was pretty impressed with
Purple Goat in Scarborugh always good for something different - they do goat curry there! or they did last time I ate there
Hippo Creek also Scarboro way, AFrican style steakhouse - always busy have to book in advance to get in
Eminem in Nedlands, fantastic turkish food, absolutely unreal and great for a treat as its a little pricey , we paid $60 per head for a Meze Style meal, there must have been about 30 different dishes all absolutely unreal, go when you are hungry and make sure you go to 6pm sitting!! excellent service
Ricki Blakes in North Perth - middle eastern type food really tasty
Pho Xua - subiaco - upmarket vietnamese, very nice
They are just a few i have eaten at in recent months and would go back to any of them

Re: Is food cheaper than Perth in the UK?
I find the quality of much of the fruit and veg to be disappointing. In well over a decade here I have yet to see a really red, ripe but reasonably firm sweet tasting tomato! And yes prices can be ridiculous for fruit and veg as well as for fish.
I find though that I still buy the local fresh fish and just eat smaller portions. Also $30 a kilo for local grown garlic is an outrage, even if you do only buy 100 grams or less at a time.

Trying to get a takeaway delivery here is what really bugs me. Yo're at home with a mate or that, had a few drinks (so can't drive) and fancy a takeaway. All you can bloody well get is pizza or chinese, and if it's after 9pm you'll probably have to make it Dominos:curse:
In NZ we could get allsorts delivered, Thai, Indian,Greek, Italian, Fish 'n' Chips, Vegetarian, even Maori
