Fixed Speed Cameras in Brisbane - Good or Bad?
Will they reduce the death toll on our roads? Or are they just a money making scheme?
Given the examples of reckless driving I witness every single day - in and around town - I'm inclined to think there should be more of them.
What do you think? What's it like in other parts of Aus?
Do Queensland drivers need a wake-up call???

I approve of the one on the Story Bridge. It is just so scary driving over there with the speed that people go. You have to keep up with them or face having an accident.

As these cameras are permanent fixtures they are most likely to be installed in areas where they are needed for saftey reasons. It's the handheld and Multanovas that are the revenue raisers.

At $170 000 per hour, of course there will be more of them, and as the experts say, it will not cut the road toll.

I have an idea.
If the government/police are adamant that speed cameras of either sort are NOT about revenue raising, but improving road safety why don't they change the penalty system?
Say, each time you get causght, you lose demerit points as usual, but pay no fine. However, when you lose 6 points, you have to do 50 hours of community service.
Lose a further 6, and therefore having lost all 12, you do the same as now ie: either lose your licence for so many months, or drive on a good behaviour bond. You also have to do 100 hours of community service if you surrender your licence. Doubled to 200 if you lose it under the bond.
This way, it's not about revenue raising, there is more of a deterent (in my opinion) as I'd rather pay a $75 fine, than paint over graffitti or pick up rubbish all day, and the community benefits.
