Finding the best location to live in sydney.
Hi,
My name is Aaron and im 21. i'm moving to sydney in 2 weeks on my own to start a new career within the rail industry. Although, having never been to sydney, I was wondering where is the best place to live within sydney? Is flat sharing the cheapest and best way to meet new people? If so, what is the best website to review flat sharing apartments?
Thanks,
Aaron

Thank you, these are useful wesites. Do you know any areas that should be avoided? My intention is to live in CBD area in the heart of sydney.

western and southern suburbs have dubious reputations but are cheaper to live in. cbd/inner west usually are more expensive but if you're sharing it might help. i also recommend suburbs along the northern and north shore lines of cityrail ( www.cityrail.com.au ).

Well I haven't seen any groups of young men in gangs causing trouble since 2005. Perhaps there was method to this madness

West and South West I would concur with, but generally the southern suburbs,i.e. those mostly in Sutherlandshire, are fairly stable family areas.

For the OP, Sydney is VERY expensive so yes consider flat share. In your position, as little as I know, I would recommend living around the Neutral Bay to Chatswood corridor on the norther side of the harbour. Good transport links into the City and North Sydney and would help you acclimatise to the madness that is Sydney.

Thank you paddyo, this is useful. Transport is a main issue, because if i can find a reasonable apartment near the best links to my work place is probably the best plan. Chatswood seems to be the best area. Thank you for this advice

I have lots of colleagues in your industry and they live all over the place. From Bondi to Hornsby and Edgecliff to Parramatta. It all depends on how you wish to socialise. If you are day working then the city is your oyster, if you work shifts though then you do need to check the commute times.
The 'hip' places to live as a 21 yr old would be Bondi Junction, Newtown and Surry Hills and they are easy to commute to/from, but I still reckon get used to the place first by renting in a slightly quieter suburb until you know your job and your daily routine better. Personally if I was a single guy in Sydney I would live in Balmain/Pyrmont but they can be a tad expensive and probably more for the 30's age group, not exclusively though.

If I wasn't so adverse to commuting I'd live there in a flash.
