Financial Crisis: Aus Govt to consider reducing immigration quotas
aka....f off, we're full!
CANBERRA - Australia said on Friday it will re-think a large boost to immigration as the global financial crisis buffets the economy and places a brake against years of strong growth.
With economic expansion tipped by the IMF to almost halve to just above two per cent, centre-left Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said his government would re-assess the need for a planned 19.8 per cent immigration increase, or 31,000 extra migrant places.

Surely immigration boosts the economy - all those visa, skills assessment etc charges, not to mention the capital most immigrants arrive with

Yes it does, they'll just tighten up the skills requirements to what they used to be pre-boom I imagine, ie degree qualified, lots more hoops to jump through. Can see their point and imagine all countries inc. UK to be doing the same as their economies drop

no point in having immigrants if there are no jobs. just means more unemployment.

With increasing population the various state govts havent even got enough money to clear out the sewers in some areas.
Also vast amounts have to be spent on rail, roads, power, housing, health and education facilities ect.
The NSW Govt is so cash strapped virtually every project is going to be cancelled.

The infrastructure costs would increase if more immigrants come, and the Govt has even less money to spend.

Hmmm...I have seen the immigration (skilled) criteria getting tighter and tighter over the years.
Loads of immigrants with no jobs means burden in my view. Empty mind is devil's workshop!

that means there is still 150,000 per annum normal run-rate of expected migration - or in basic terms no change to business as usual.

Also all the Aus skilled people coming out of uni have to be employed.
I worked in the legal field and in the industry magazine one month it said that there were more people studying law in university here than the whole employed legal profession so guess we do not need any lawyers.
As most of our tradies are self employed it affects them badly if there is a blip in the building industry.
Still need lots of medicos and health workers though.

I think it's quite clear that we're all going to be hit by a worldwide recession - it's no good bringing more people over if there are no jobs. Australia (and WA) may be sheltered a little bit in comparison to the US and Europe, but don't expect that it's not going to be felt over here.
As headlines indicated this week, the Perth boom is no more.

I guess this is just another challenge to get through. Have to say I take the point: why would anyone want a continued potential burden on the system in a downturn.
Just hope it does not hit current visa applicants, because a lot of dreams could be shattered.

Our council (Cheltenham Borough which is quite small in comparison to some) invested £12 million! Expect our council tax to zoom up!

I cant see this affecting any current applicants. The quota will go down though. This will be repeated everywhere UK/Canada/US .
As new migrants your almost at an advantage as you can up sticks and move to where the work is.

Unemployment rate has started to rise. It looks set to get worse too.
Just yesterday a half billion dollar commercial construction project in Melbourne was axed, a half billion dollar residential construction project in Brisbane was also axed. To axe projects like that ( years in the planning millions already spent ) things are not looking good.
It was pretty obvious to anyone in construction that jobs were already slowing, its probably good that Rudd has actually picked this up now rather than after another X hundred thousand peeps arrive to find no work.
Serious times.

Newscom article this morning about holiday homes in Byron being put on the market, said it was tightly held but now people are selling their holiday homes on the coast.
