Final trip to airport

Final trip to airport
Picture the scene - house sold, furniture shipped, cars sold, suitcases packed.
Two adults and two children with enough cases to sink a battleship (all carefully weighed though so as not to be too heavy) making their trip to Heathrow to catch the plane to a new life in Oz.
My question is - how do you get to the airport ? Our cars will be sold, my dad would take us but no way would he fit all four of us in and the suitcases as well. If we caught the coach we'd have the same issue getting to the coach station, the train station is closer and we could get a taxi there but what about at the other end - how would we get off with all that luggage before the train took off again (not to mention how would we carry it around).
I know that we are quite a distance away from having this issue - but I like to be organised. What is everyone else doing or has done ?

Re: Final trip to airport
We hired a car from Lincoln for a few days and then to Heathrow. Can't remember who from ... maybe Avis. Anyway at Heathrow we then just had to give the keys back at the car desk. Cost-wise it was about the same as for a taxi from Ipswich (my parents), but it gave us a lot more room.
We also didn't want anyone seeing us off at the airport, so by arranging the car hire it gave us a good excuse not to have the tearful goodbyes.

They allowed us to barter prices too. (well Avis did) and they were so helpful it was a stress reliever using Avis.

we booked a minibus type taxi and stayed at a hotel at the airport the night before, it made it a bit easier on us and the family we were leaving behind !!

We had a hire car for the last five days in the UK through Avis. Left it at Heathrow, and picked up another Avis car in Sydney when we got there. We also had 40kg. of luggage each which amounted to six suitcases and hand luggage, and it was a very tight squeeze getting everything in. If you go this option, can I suggest you make sure you get a large enough car to hold you all plus your luggage!!

If you down the rental route, have a look at easyjet.com and get a quote for europcar from their car rental links, I booked a car this way last week, and the cost was half what I was quoted on the main europcar web page!
For me this gave me the best price for a one way rental from LHR to my parents as part of the farewell tour on the way to Sydney

We have just booked through National Car Hire, one week, one way picking up at Sunderland and dropping at GAtwick one week later. Model is Mondeo Estate or equivalent which takes two adults, 3 children and 5 cases (we are family of four). This is at a cost of around £180 so we thought this was the best way to do it.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza the night before and got there by a company who specialised in airport runs. They had a people carrier for us and then a trailer on the back for all our luggage. The following day we just hopped on the shuttle bus which you pay for and that takes you direct to the aiport.
