A few things about medical here that I've learned

They have a bazaar system here. You can have all the insurance possible, public and private, and if you need surgery or something you will still have to pay thousands up front to get the work done. And then hope to get half or so back. Or(!) if you don't have private health you're almost guaranteed to be on wait lists that last years. Haven't experienced that myself but have had far too many friends that have and are still on the waiting lists. Coupled with the survival of the fittest mentality that exists here it's probably engineered that way in hopes that you die first so they can save money...

Private health insurance companies here are LEGALLY allowed to discriminate against you. I have actually read the section and it does say they can discriminate. So if you suspect you may have some sort of condition don't go to the doctor first what ever you do. Go and get your insurance coverage increased or you may find you will never be allowed any coverage - ever. Funny thing is my first year here I went to the doctors because I was feeling quite depressed because of the whole situation of moving half way round the world and landing what had to be the worst job I've ever had in my life. Nothing ever came of any of it. I quit the job and got settled in and the depression went away... But years later that has come back to haunt me as I am now not allowed disability or death insurance because I had a bout of minor depression. In fact they took away the pitiful amount that I already had... All those don't you dare criticize my Australia types are thinking there must be more to it.... NOPE! But you believe what ever you like.

So if you have a super fund you already have basic coverage for death and disability. And if you haven't had any "suspicious" visits to the doctor get your insurance maxed out to as high as you can before some innocent checkup has you put on the banned list for life.
