Hi,

An Australian citizen new born child want to enter Australia. Should he apply for Australian Passport or Australian Declaratory visa? Or he can enter Australia using his citizenship certificate as well???

Australian Passport and Declaratory visa both are very expensive.

Please suggest??

Not really sure what you meant but, I think you need to apply for Australian Citizenship certificate for the baby and then an Australian Passport, in order to enter Australia permanently.

My daughter did this for her two children, to ensure there would be no problems. She is hoping to move back to Oz some time early next year. Unfortunately eldest child is going to Italy in January for school trip and just looked at her UK passport, there will only be 4 months left on it when she goes, rules stipulate 6 months, so it looks like she is going to have to purchase another UK passport too! I know she will be able to travel on her new Oz passport but we don't want any problems for the teachers at the airports!

It can be expensive this dual citizenship lark.

Who is telling you about this 6 month rule? It does apply in some countries (eh Singapore) but not generally. If she is going to Italy her British passport does not need to have 6 months validity. As long as it is valid for her trip + return she ought to be ok.

It might make more sense for child to get a new passport in the U.K. anyway but that's another issue.

She will need to be the uk passport anyway if the child has an oz passport as a dual has to leave on the uk passport and has to arrive on the aus passport.

You don't have to leave the UK on a UK passport. If you are flying to Australia, and have an Aus passport, there is no need for anything else, you leave on that one.

Has that changed in the past couple of years? I have done this on my last three journeys. What would happen at the uk end if you produced an oz passport with no visas for the uk?

If you are entering as a tourist, nothing would happen - don't need a visa for a short holiday. :)

Thanks for this, we will look into this more, as I am sure we have been told in the past (travel agents) that you need 6 months validity on your passport wherever you travel. If you are correct, that will save us having to buy another passport that will probably never get used again, as from next year they will be moving to Aus, and will use their Australian passports from thereon.

Hi not sure if you are aware of the cost so thought would list them just in case as I have recently got my children theirs:
Citizenship certificate=AUD$110 which was approx £45
Passport for child=£40 +mandatory postage£5+cost of photos

total is just under £100 each which isn't that bad.:unsure:
I wonder if anyone knows if you can take the baby over with a british passport with a holiday visa in and sort an Australian one when you get there? But then you will have the expense of the brit passport on top of the other costs for Aus which you would still have to pay.

No, because an Australian citizen cannot hold any kind of visa.

And even if the child is not yet an Australian citizen, it is strongly inadvisable (dire emergencies excepted) to turn up as a tourist with a plan to remain.

I only hold a UK passport :)
