Hi to all

I am just asking for a little feedback to an idea I am pursuing to help prospective guys like yourself a better insight to life in Oz.

I made the move from Southampton around 4 years ago...loved every minute of life here until my wife unfortunately had a bad brain injury which has left her paralysed and our lives have had to re-adjust.

My idea revolves around offering more insiders information on life in Australia by way of DVD's purchased through a dynamic website (I am a web designer). There is plenty of video type media concentrating on the more tourist aspects of Oz....but I feel (as was in my case before entering Australia) that the following up to date live footage DVD's would be most helpful:

I want to produce various DVD's for the most popular immigration destinations.......each DVD would contain footage from a broad range of housing areas, inside house views together with the housing prices...walk about footage of various suburbs/areas including shopping centres, schools, people, leisure facilities, clubs, pubs, restaurants, hospitals, parks, beaches etc.......way of life including people, fashion, furniture (yes its different), transport (cars and types), wildlife. Local literature will accompany the DVD's containing up to date job marts. housing brochures, cars for sale etc.

The list goes on but will include actual footage you want to see to help make up your mind of any given area......I can remember those 4 years ago back in the UK of wanting so much to see what an Aussie house looked like inside and what I actual could get with my money before setting foot here.

If I feel there may be a market...I intend to allow users to request an actual suburb/area anywhere in Oz if they know a particular area they wish to concentrate on.

OK...many thanks for reading this far...I would be so grateful if you could just reply with a few words stating if you would find a service such as this of definite interest to you (or not).......THIS is by no way of a sale.....you will be over here before something like this actually got off the ground, but your input would go a very long way into my decision.

Thanks for you time and good luck with your immigration process....if its any consolation....no matter what people say...in our case we would never return to the UK.

I for one think its a good idea. Although you would have a small market, you would have new customers doing the migrate each year......and if they are going to spend 1,000s on such a move, then £15 or so on a specialist DVD would be a drop in the ocean.

It needs to be good though so that word of mouth sells it rather than an expensive marketing ploy.

You might be able to tie in with some of the migration agencies.

Another vote in favour here. As well as the migration agencies the shippers may be a route to market. John Mason and others give you info packs for this sort of thing. Then there is the monthly magazine a lot of us read before we came out here to advertise in.

Great idea - here now so wouldnt need but would have been useful if the existence of such a DVD was known before hand. As would this site have been which I also discovered after I arrived.
I would think selecting an area is often the hardest part of migrating so maybve a DVD devoted to a broad overview of all areas, State and Cities, may be a good start. Possibly charge £30 and offer a free detailed DVD of any suburb thus selected.
Mind you, offering real estate, car dealer, furniture shop, airlines, banks and migration agents, for instance, a bit of advertising space on your DVD will probably enable you to give it it away!

Since we moved here we have been filiming EVERYTHING. Our house gradually gettin furnished, BBQ's and every Beach and reserve we have found. Its all pretty boring stuff, but our friends and family seem to be fasinated by them and watch them over and over.........(maybe its just cos we are on it) :) But anyway, I think its a geat idea for those who are looking to make a move out here...

I stuck my Video camera on my dashboard once, and drove around the area. Watched it later, and it's interesting how much you see, when you don't have to watch the road.
I suppose even something like that would be interesting for people who haven't seen an area.

I think you could be on to something here!! When I lived in the States I often thought about writing a "How to" manual on for newbies from the UK on where to go for insurance, jobs, decent cars, clothes, housing etc as we had been and done it the hard way. The only way to find out such info was to go to an English bar and chat to the locals. My only hesitation would be keeping a DVD up to date ie housing prices etc but I guess you could supply links or as you say an accompanying brochure with current info. Before we made the move I would go to the local libraries and read books and watch any documentary and film on Oz to get a feel for the place but mostly they only catered for the tourist aspect. A fleeting shot of a rollercoaster and a kangaroo does not make good research!

Given that it's quite a specialist market I guess the best bet would be to burn DVDs as and when orders come in - you can buy printer-ready blanks and produce a nice cover for them. That way you'd just have to update your data every couple of weeks and the customer would always get up-to-date info. :)

This will sell for sure - when we were emigrating we would buy anything and everything to do with Brisbane - even bought billy conolly world tour on DVD at some exhorbitantprice because it had 1 episode in brisbane.

Things like the areas - how far apart they are, what the supermarkets are like, the shopping malls etc - because from reading on this forum you get the idea you are going to some 3rd world country - but seeing it and being here are totally different. These sound inane things and not important but it does make it easier to realise and visualise the place without actually flying over.

Since DVD's are readily burnable on demand I guess its a low early investment so good luck.

I think its a great idea :) the list of stuff you can do is endless and would be a huge help to people coming over.

Very true....Also a top tip list on driving over here, just the little things that are different would really help ....When we first got here 'out of habit I tried to let someone out, flashed me lights to let them go and they sat there looking very confused :)
