I do take your point that not everyone can help themselves.
My initial posting was directed at individuals who, through their own
greedy self indulgence, seem to be taking a free ride at the expense
of others.

Have you been watching "You are what you eat" on C4?

They had a couple
on this week, the guy had the most enormous gut you've ever seen and the
wife cooked everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, in about two inches of
oil!

He was having two to three fry ups a day!

The week before
they had a family on, they were feeding their kids absolute rubbish (the
doctor said it was food abuse) and spending over £100 a week on
takeaways!

Then they had the nerve to say they couldnt afford to buy
"decent" food!!!!

They had three kids - the tax credits alone would
have easily covered it (but dont get me started on that one...)

Totally agree,
and people like that make me angry on behalf of all the people like me
who have a medical condition!

The irony is that I'm actually relatively
slim, and often find myself stuck next to 'persons larger' on
planes....

I think
smokers and drinkers already do pay (though the gov. probably allocate
the revenue from duty on these to minority lesbian cooperatives).

You
can make all the sports facilities you like available 24/7, but you wont
get Mr and Mrs Blobby off their fat arses to use them.

Stop giving
out tax credits and make people pay their way in society, then they wont
be able to afford Happy Meals and the like...

The fat tax, imposed on fatty foods would be there to deter people from
eating fatty foods and therfor reducing peoples intake of said foods. In
principle it is a good idea, practically i'm not so sure.

What you are
suggesting ( and revelling in i might add ) is to punish people for
being overweight. The majority of cases are self inflicted, granted, but
there are people with genuine eating disorders. Is it not enough that
they go through life being ridiculed and pointed/ laughed at without
being punished aswell ?
I was under the impression that your baggage on
flights ( especially long haul ) takes up very little of the actual
cargo. The seats are seats and shall remain so whether vacant or not,
but the hold is crammed full of frieght, this is why the airlines are
shit hot on baggage allowance.

perhaps a little tact would be
appropriate.

Last November in oz I had half a rugby team sitting in front of me,on
a plane from Alice springs to Melbourne. There were 2 spare seats next
to me and the cabin crew asked me if I minded if one guy came and sat
next to me- he did a good Martin ? whathisname -England captain impression-
his knees were up on the seat in front he couldn't stretch out at all
- so should he have been charged more, he took up one and a half
seats! :scared:

Every single member of the Rugby World Cup winning squad was estimated
to be obese, hight versus weight ratio. Martin Johnson his name.

Hi
Bridiej

I didn't say that I said that was the debate. There has been
loads in the press in the past few months about overweight people paying
extra for nhs treatment. Exemtions for people of course who are
medically overweight through thyroid problems etc etc.

IMHO I believe
smokers and drinkers pay enough tax on what they buy. I'm a drinker and
get stung left right and centre.

Drugs I don't know, other than making
them legal and getting tax for them. Disclaimer: I'm not advocating
making drugs legal.

Sport, I'm 100% with you on that one, all stems
back to the Tory government of the 80's and 90's flogging playing fields
and closing youth clubs to build housing for the yupee generation.

I'm
not sure if I'm in favour of a fat tax on the individual. I would
advocate those greedy bastard food companies to pay the fat tax because
of all the crap they put in their products.

And to add some parity
blokes that wear 40 inch jeans pay the same as blokes who wear 32 inch
ones.

And I thought I wasn't going to join this debate.......

Good point. The
problem isn't lack of facilities, its lack of initiative and personal
incentive.

It doesn't actually cost anything to do some
exercise...walking to the corner shop instead of driving is a good
start. People think their lives are too busy to exercise...this is just
a poor excuse for many.

I read an article yesterday about a woman who
had moved out of the city and was enjoying living in a small town...she
said that since moving she had 'even taken up walking'....WTF...!!!!
