family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
My wife and I have had a lively "discussion" on the weekly grocery bill including cleaning products and other necessary items.
I have not yet sat down to do an objective analysis of the average cost per week but one of us thinks it seems excessive and the other one of us says do the !!!!!!!!!! shopping yourself if you think you can do better. We both work full time so spending time searching out the best deals is not really on the cards but it would be interesting to know what other people spend on the weekly shop. |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
We spend around $280 per week (2 adults & 3 kids) on shopping but that is shopping at Aldi & buying fresh fruit at market and no luxuries. Shopping at Coles or Woolies would be much more expensive.
|
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
We're in SA and we spend between $250-$270 per week (Coles online; delivered to the door) for two adults, a toddler and a baby.
We grow a lot of our own vegetables (lettuce, spinach, silverbeet, carrots, capsicums, peas, beans, cucumbers) which helps to keep costs down. Looking forward to our first pumpkin. |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
Between $300 and $400 per week for us (2 adults and three kids aged 6, 4 and 2) and most of my shopping is done at Woolies (Manly) because it's convenient. I believe that the prices at most shopping centres such as Woolies, IGA and Coles are partly determined by which area you are shopping in. Go to a cheap area and you'll find the prices, in say Woolies, will be cheaper than Woolies in a more expensive area!

Seriously it would be good to see your shopping list. Might have to call you as a witness in the divorce court though.
Burgers and salad Spaghetti bolognese Cantonese chicken with rice Chicken, potatoes, veg and gravy Beef with bok choy and oyster sauce with rice Steak and chips Fish and leek pie We find buying cooked meat from the deli section is cheaper than the pre packed section and limit ourselves to 6 bottles of soft drink a week. |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
Between Oct-Dec we spent $110pw using credit card, on food and household expenses, as follows:
$163 ALDI $303 Butchers $145 Fruit and Veg Shop $390 Woolworths $425 Coles ( I didn't think I went there that often) ------- $1,425 for 13 weeks = $110 per week + I spend up to another $100 in cash each week. So up to $210 pw for the 4 of us. 3 Adults and 1 x 14year old. |

Time spent looking to save money is costly. Of course You also have to understand that clinique cosmetics and designer shoes ARE essential weekly shopping items for some of us girls.. OK? |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
We are in Victoria
We spend aprox $300 per week on groceries for 2 adults and a toddler (this includes diapers which are ridiculously expensive). We shop at Coles, which is the only supermarket in our town. We have been meaning to make a trip into Melbourne to Costco to see if we can stock up on some bulk non perishables. |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
About 280 a week, 2 adult 2 teens. Thats healthy food, combo of markets, aldi, and specials from coles and woolworth.
I expect it to rise pretty much overnight, if the news is a guide, someone at the fruit and veg markets was saying if it was $10 a box it will soon be $40 a box. Yes I know we had floods, however I dont really think everything we ate came from queensland:rolleyes:. In fact in a discussion on this matter last night we pulled 25 items from the kitchen and only two items were from queensland. Produce we buy from local farmers markets is of course from qld, but most had stock on saturday and are already planting again. Wet but not wiped out. However prices were pretty much up all round, i would say there were double the amount of people there on saturday. |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
:eek::eek: Where on earth can you all afford that much on groceries???
For 2 adults we roughly spend $130 - $150 That's going to Aldi, Iga and local market. Kim |

I've found that I waste more since I've had children as they won't eat what I give them half of the time and it ends up in the bin.:sneaky: These days I mostly feed them fish fingers, homemade veg purée, cereals, baked beans, bananas and sandwiches. That's all they eat and I don't waste my time and money preparing lovely home cooked stuff that they'll refuse - and they go to bed hungry when they do that btw :o |
Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
$150 to $200 for 2 adults, 1 five year old and a dog.
And that's with plenty of veggies and not holding back on decent meat ... organic hand-fed chicken that has been read to every night, that kind of thing. I would imagine the recent floods around the country will have a effect on all this. The booze bill? Don't ask :D |

Does your bill include all meals throughout the week? Or do you buy lunch when you are at work? If you do, then your bill should include that.

We do not buy any processed food as it is understood in the UK - or what I consider to be processed food*. Little junk. Staples: pasta and veggies, rice, cous-cous - we seem to buy bread, milk, (low and full-fat), 1kg cheese blocks, yoghurt and ham on an hourly basis. The boss makes her own bread occasionally. ii. Lots of stir-frys so the larder shelving is straining under the load of tins of tomatoes. (Aldi). iii. Our veggie garden is on-stream and providing daily zucchini and soon a ton of tomatoes (ha!). iv. Other stuff like spices and sauces as and when. v. Chicken is the main meat. I am responsible for buying steaks and chops which I could get from Tasman but get from Woolies mostly. *What you consider to be processed might differ. Apart from the obvious junk, we don't buy food in overly packaged or presented form, if the fresh is available. Apart from the tins of tomatoes.... How about we start a 'This is a photo of our fridge/larder' thread:p so we can all marvel at our choices.. |

Having said that the rest of the tribe are making their own arrangements today so I am microwaving a can of Big Soup, chucking in some extra onion and going back to student mode. Could be worse, could be a Pot Noodle ... |

The $200 is on the top side, this week it came to $170. I set aside $800 per month on food so when we have a 5 week month I struggle with $160 a week but on the whole it is manageable.

Speaking the bleeding obvious - the easiest way to spend less is to not buy 'rubbish' - and I realise that this definition is suspect and differs widely. Naturally, it is the rubbish which costs. I mean, when I was buying for myself I could add 50pc by just buying several packets of biscuits, an entire cheeseboard - et cetera. Noone needs fabric softener - my mother never used it and nor do we. You don't need Mortein or a hundred cleaning products. It's naff to buy pre-mixed drinks. I know all this because I spy the contents of people's baskets and trollies - and most of it is not needed (and of course, sometimes unhealthy). It's an individual thing, and of course, a choice they are perfectly entitled to make. And I like a packet of biscuits like the next person.
Agree with you on not buying rubbish - biscuits etc and excess cleaning whizbang products, vinegar is brill and a buck for 2 litres.. But healthy food IS the expensive stuff. Lean meat is big bucks not the meat barn fat and gristle stuff, fruit, vegies:eek:, even milk the low fat is more than full cream, granary bread is 4 times the price of bowel clog white. Fish is V expensive too, unless you want to buy some frozen imported farmed stuff. Salmon is usually near $40 a kilo:blink: I love coming up with recipies made from legumes or oats:lol:, cheap as you can get, asian bean patties, or sugar free oat bars - delicious. In home ec, youngest took the sugar free bars to a school function, the teacher told him blunt, disgusting, you need to put lots of sugar in them, think the point went over her head. |

Re: family of 3 weekly supermarket cost QLD
About $170 a week.
2 adults, 2 teens, a 4 YO, a dog and 5 chooks ;) Hubby does the shopping on a saturday, if I do it it ends in a row :sneaky: He goes to the farmers market for fruit and veg, then into Aldi for everything else except what he cant get in Aldi, then nips next door into Woolies. We buy 1/2 hind of cow and 1/2 a lamb in bulk, grass fed, groomed daily type things..($250 from local butcher) and then chicken breast/ fish/ bacon off the deli when we need it. This includes lunches for everyone and one take away a week. Vege patch is up and running and we get 4 eggs a day so I'm looking at recipies for eggs and zucchinis :D |
