Cheers, best quote ever on this thread and also others in the same vein. We came with the same thoughts in 1981 and personally, though we had many hard times (how many different way can you cook mince??? contact me I'll sell you the book! dont regret it at all). Also gotta remember that the interest rate rose to something like 17.5% just after we got our mortgage...sorry but I gotta laugh sometimes when I read some of the b*tching on here. Sometimes it's do it hard and be more grateful, do it too easy and take it for granted!
My plan is to keep a property in UK and rent it out. UK £'s make more A$'s which will eventually will fund a mortgage for us in Oz. I plan to go forever, rose tinted or not. Ive had it here in the UK, but I know that the demons inside, will travel alongside me. Its up to me to eliminate them once in Oz............... I dare not read the Back to UK Forum. |

Anyone who is prepared to graft in oz will go a long way. i think for most of auusies compared to brits their lifestyle comes before job commitments as where in england otherway round ie live to work work to live. I worked in perth for 6 months as a traveller and i felt i wasnt putting half the work commitment in as i did back in uk and i was earning very good money and i was asked onmany occasions can we get anymore poms in you guys are real grafters!

Wouldn't bother, though not much there to dissuade you anyway. The best reasons for coming back they could come up with there were real ale, fishing and dry-roasted peanuts!

Hi
I've been wandering about on other forums and there seems to be some rather high expectations of some people emigrating to Australia, such as the good weather all the time, cost of living being vastly cheaper, houses are far bigger, jobs are easier to find and better paid and so on. I'm also interested to see how many people are expecting to go and never come home, do you never think you'll return perminently to the UK or do you think you'll never be homesick? We've lodged our 136 visa and plan to go for 2 years, rent the house out and see what happens. We want to get a different life experience for a bit but so many people are selling up and giving it there all, some who've never even been there? This isn't meant to be antagonistic, I'm just really curious to know what people are expecting from Australia, and whether they are prepared for migration perminently or are the same as us, lets just have a change of scene for a bit. i would say "expect nothing from oz and then everything you like about it comes as a bonus"... |

Yep I was thinking of doing that. But in the past when we have taken people shopping they think the shops are great  they only see new brands and not things that are missing.
The rest don't really notice(!) I can buy all I need, and, all I want, too. The only gripe is the relative cost of groceries. But I'd rather pay for this than pay more on my mortgage. The groceries are interest free, the housing cost isn't. There a bean counter adding money on that one around the clock. |
