Would like to talk about specifics including the following:
Relocation assistance 1) Will they pay for temporary housing until we find a place, and how long will they pay for it? only Rio can answer that 2) Selling our vehicles before we move or transporting them over...what is the policy on that? http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...les/index.aspx This should answer your questions. Personally I can't see the benefit of importing a LHD car to Australia. 3) Covering closing costs on the home purchase or would we be on our own? Only Rio can answer that. 4) Limitations on what and how much you can ship? http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4224.asp Will answer all your questions. ExPat benefits 1) Paid trips home for me and dependents...do they do that? How often? Only answered by Rio 2) Tax equalization and how does that work? http://www.ato.gov.au/ Even as a temporary resident you will pay the same tax as everyone else. Some employers pay LAFHA, living away from home allowance. it comes under the Fringe Benefits Tax umbrella. Ask about it when negotiating your package with Rio. It makes a substantial difference to your take home pay. You lose this allowance if you decide to apply for PR. 3) Childs education...do they pay for schooling or partially subsidize it? Only answered by Rio |

What do you do for Rio Tinto (which department)? Also, where are the various Rio offices located around Perth? Thanks. |

That is a great link...thanks for providing it...I just need to find one that applies to the US rather than the UK, but a lot of the points are applicable to both. One thing you have to think about in advance is whether you want to become a permanent resident or not. Permanent residence lets you stay independently of employer and become a citizen in due course (you can keep American citizenship) and gives you other benefits but it brings your overseas income and capital gains fully into the Australian tax system and that's not for everyone. If you do want to become permanent, best to deal with that at the start - not later on. Also, as a US citizen you will remain liable for US federal taxes no matter how long you live overseas. Normally you get a credit for Australian taxes paid and you can also exclude a certain amount of earned income. You might still be liable for state taxes, depending on the state and how much of your ties you have severed with that state, and for Social Security/Medicare depending on the social security agreement. In addition, as a US citizen overseas you have to report all bank accounts if you have US$10k or more in foreign banks and when older, your children (boys, anyway) will have to register with Selective Service. Many overseas Americans forget this and it can cause problems later on. |

In Western Australia I believe state schooling is free for immigrants regardless of visa, however if you want top notch private schooling you will have to pay the school fees.
