Excuse me while I brag ....
about my clever hubby who passed his HR driving licence today after only 3 hours of lessons plus a wee practice drive just before the test.
Test lasted for about 45-50 mins and he only made 2 mistakes - first was that he was too slow crossing a X junction (how can you be fast from a standing start in something weighing 24 tonnes and that has 10 gears) and second was the he didnt turn his wheels into the kerb properly when parking.
So I now have a "truckie" hubby. be able to save a fortune when we eventually move to a new house

Well done Chris

Well done Chris, was it hard to park the truck? Most people struggle to park a normal family car let alone something that big
See you soon Mairi for coffee and more cakes

Mairi - will you be loaning Chris and his newly aquired skills to other expats who may be in need of removals? Although, having said that I think Mr. Mover may not too happy if you did!

Congrats. To all you ex HGVers:
I passed my HR from scratch after 5 hrs. I think the last hr was the test. I made loads of tiny mistakes and scraped a past - to my amazement. This was in WA so it was fairly laid back. I also got the 10 tonne truck with 10 tonne load - or something.
Best 150 quid I spent in years. I see it as an investment now. Although many road transport trucks are artic - "Heavy Combination HC", Heavy Rigid HR means you can drive any prime mover - so that applies to dumpsters, large vehs on sites etc.
With a UK car license held for 3 years, I went straight to HR missing out the Light Rigid and Medium Rigid. MR is like a pommy truck. HR is like a US truck with the 13 gears - mine had the 13 gears I think.
I think HGV in the UK is over 4 tonnes ? so probably may only equate to LR and MR over here.
here is the scale :
LR
MR
HR (start with this one)
HC (essentially Articulated)
MC (Multiple Combination road train)

I passed my HR driving licence in 2 hours, must admit though, it took me considerably longer for my pilots licence

Hi There, I've got an australian car licence and will be returning to Oz later this year hopefully as perm resident, however I also have a british HGV Class 1 licence ( Now called LGV 1) from my early days as a trucker (always kept my hand in so to speak).
I would like to get a HC (essentially Articulated) licence when I return to Australia in order to get some artic work whilst looking for IT work which is my main job.
I never looked into getting an HC licence whilst down in Sydney, can any one tell me what is involved in getting one and would I have to resit the computer based theory test ?
cheers

Sorry to go off a bit, but whilst you're on about driving courses/licences, does anyone know how I can get hold of any info on crane operators courses in Aus?
TIA.
