Not sure, but I would imagine unlikely, as it is all done the in the 'Matrix' so to speak. I could be wrong though.

In Qld they issue you with a full receipt that serves as a temp licence. It has your drivers licence number on it & you can use it for id. I even used it to hire a car here in the U.K as my replacement didn't arrive in the three weeks they'd said it normally takes.

How long does it take for them to post the license and can someone at the address receive the letter if you happen to be away?

Mine in Vic came in about 10 days and was delivered into letterbox. Didn't need signing for x

Thanks for the info.

So let me get this right: there are older service centres that issue licenses on the spot, and there are newer ("refurbished") ones that only post out the license and cannot issue it on the spot?

If this is so, do you have to go to the nearest centre closest to your place of residence, or can you go to one further away (an older one for instance if you want the license straight away)?

It's not the UK. You can go to whichever one you choose.

Not sure. Probably best to phone them and find out. They will have all the info.

The old RTA registries can print on the spot. The ones that have been refurbished and are now called Service Centres can not print (eg the one at Wynyard has reopened as a Service Centre)
