Default evaporate air conditioning

hi
can any one advise on this?
renting a 4x2 with evaporate air conditioning. doesn't seem to work that well, has been seviced recently, some one has said that you need to leave a window in the house open, to make it work properly. is this true?
(to date have kept all windows closed)
thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

You need to leave a door open and lock the flyscreen/security door.Blowing air into the house and nowhere to get out can can split ceilings as pressure builds up.They usually drop the temp by 8-10 degrees. On a humid day only turn the fan on and not the water pump, the humid air just gets wetter and the house will be very humid. The fan should cool the house as it changes the air in it.They were pretty much the only choice in the 80 ,s as the heat pump reverse cycle ones were so expensive, now it costs more to fit the air conditioner than it does to buy the unit.

Evaporative works on evaporation not refrigeration,Coolgardie fridge principle.Water is pumped up the roof mounted unit and then drips down filter pads, air is drawn in and evaporates the water, cooling it.the air is then blown through the house. Before ice was available butter etc were cooled by leaving them inside a wet sack with water dripping down it,evaporation kept it cool.If you see a truck with a water bag at the front it is the same principle,a godsend when i was truck driving, the water was always ice cold.

They only work in very hot dry air.

OOps forgot, turn the water pump on for around 5 mins before the fan,it gives the filter pads a chance to get wet.If they do not get wet then obviously evaporation does not cool the air and you are just blowing hot air around the house. Works on the same principle as your body sweating to cool you down.

Brisbane electrical stores always sold lots of portable evap units during heatwaves to unsuspecting buyers Totally useless of course when it was humid.

I noticed a couple of roof mounted evap units here in Cairns. They must have brought them up from Melbourne when they moved.

We tried one of these but found them useless! It would have been cooler rubbing two sticks together. Buy a decent portable AC unit and make sure the pipe goes out the window, At least then you will actually feel some difference.
