Re: Ethnic TV presenters
I myself have moved here in hope of a better life.....
I am by no means judging anybody, but if this is the country people decide to make a new life in, then why should they complain ..... This is the country we have chosen to live in and we try our best to accept the way things are done here no matter how difficult it is!
There are many people all over the world that would love to live in Australia, but can't get in due to age, qualifications, etc, so I would say we are very lucky to be living here!!!

As far as i can remember Australia was until recently activly seeking skilled migrants to move here.
Just because i decided to live in Australia doesnt mean i have to agree or accept everything thing i see around me, just as i wouldnt do if i lived in the Uk or any other country for that matter.
I am also pretty sure this is a discussion forum, so nothing stopping you posting a topic headed "i love Australia and everything in it even if i dont but i musnt complain as i am a migrant"

Race, nation and ethnic groups are all "imagined communities" anyway. Searching for a (physical) scientific definition of them is pointless, you just have to accept that a) they exist and b) their definition is arbitrary. (Whether you add c) they are pointless is up to you).
Quite - which is why the OP's post is so confusing and why people who talk about 'ethnics' are morons.
Because ethnic groups are effectively racial subsets; because when white people whine about "ethnics" they're not talking about Canadians, Estonians or Belgians; and because it became clear that the OP was really talking about non-whites when s/he said he wasn't talking about Greeks/Italians etc.

I think most would identify Indira Naidoo as ethnically Australian with tinges of otherness.

That's not racist though, surely Jad? After all, we don't know her motive. Some people are fascinated by people from other countries if they are a minority. In fact I've seen more fascination and genuine interest from Australians than from people in the UK about African looking people. Some people might be offended by 'terms like 'ethnic' and 'coffee'.

I will just point out to you the this is how you spell the word "actively".
I NEVER said because you are a migrant you cannot complain, everybody is entitled to complain, BUT some migrants come over here and all they do is complain ...
Every country has it's faults, and yes I may just start a thread "I love Australia"

Re: Ethnic TV presenters
Just realised there are no ethnic tv presenters on any of the TV stations apart from SBS, thats incredible for such a muticultural society like Australia, i havnt been here that long so does anybody know if Channels 7,9,10 or the ABC have ever had an ethnic presenter ie news-journalism.
One question though why do they wear such awful clothes? The object of a presenter is to present a report/fact without detracting/distracting from the report. Some of the clothing is so horrendous it is impossible to pay attention to what is being said.
Can anyone explain why the ENGLAND vs Australia Test is being playing in Wales with a black child as their mascot? Will they be playing in Scotland and N. Ireland next? Is it too dangerous for them to play at Lords - the risk of terrorism to great!

That's one of the problems of having any post that discusses ethnicity - it often leads to accusations of racist remarks when there is clearl no intent of racism inferred.

Re: Ethnic TV presenters
Sorry I am at a loss with your logical leap here...What lapin_windstar was noting was that very often ethnic groups, rightly or wrongly so, are described as subsets within wider 'racial' categories'. Unfortunately within the social world people often classify others on the basis of salient categories and given that in everyday language 'race' and ethnicity are inextricable bound it is difficult to find a good discussion of ethnicity which avoids the use of the term 'race'.

Re: Ethnic TV presenters
Poms, the BE Pom ethnics at least, seem incapable of separating race and ethnicity. This seems so entrenched in their language that I have begun to wonder if the majority of Poms are tarred with the same racist world view. That you too seem similarly afflicted:
leaves me with little reason not to believe that Poms generally are raging racists. I'm alarmed because they say they are headed my way.

Re: Ethnic TV presenters
Your own language 'BE Pom ethnics' tends to indicate a lack of understanding of the use of appropriate language. If you took time to study the texts on the use of the terms 'race' and ethnicity you will find 1) that many of them agree that the term terms are used somewhat interchangeably in everyday language - noting this fact does not make anyone a racist, nor the use of them interchangeably make someone a racist and 2) there are no universally agreed upon definitions of either term. I am so pleased to see that you see to have come up with 'indisputable' definitions of them both. Perhap you would like to share them.
