ETA visa info
Can anyone advise on this please.
I have a holiday visa for Aus, an ETA.
It expires Feb 2005.
Will they grant my permanant visa while this ETA is still valid or do I have to cancel it.
I'm sure I read somewhere that you cant hold two visa's.

We applied to emigrate then got ETA's so that we could visit whilst waiting for our PR visas. Our PR came through whilst our ETA's were still valid. So I guess you can hold both.

Once you get your PR, the ETA's will be cancelled - they'll be a bit chocolate fireguard by then anyway

A newer visa overrides any existing visa, except for certain cases - for example, an ETA does not override an existing permanent visa, etc.
If you hold a valid ETA and are in Australia when your offshore permanent visa application is granted (supposing you did not inform DIMIA of your Australian visit), the grant is invalid.
More details:
A PR visa overrides a valid ETA upon the permanent visa's valid grant. The ETA is not 'cancelled', but merely superceded. A visa 'cancellation' is not a good thing most of the time. Australia, unfortunately, does not have the concept of 'cancelled without prejudice' like elsewhere e.g. the USA.
Also, non-citizens cannot hold two visas at the same time. Australian citizens cannot hold Australian visas (except the ADV which isn't really a visa).

Re: eta visa
Since 1 July 2002, ETAs do not override other visas.
However, a regular tourist visa, or a temp visa like a student or working holiday visa, could override a PR visa if granted later on.
When granted a PR visa, all other temporary visa applications you have in the system should immediately be withdrawn. And any other PR application you have should be looked at too, as it may be important to withdraw that as well.

Be very careful here. I think that if your PR visa is granted and then your ETA is granted, the PR visa will become invalid. It looks like your time frame might not cause you a problem but it might be worth emailing your case officer / agent with your ETA details explaining what you will do and when.
