I don't care how old you are - that lifelike dinosaur in the natural history museum is the business.

if it's good enough to scare young children away because it's too real looking - it's good enough for me.

How old are they? Have you only just moved there?
Lots of Brits live 20 miles from France and they've never been.

There's the London Dungeons (creeped my two out, but was OK), an open-top double-decker bus ride, Rainforest Cafe in the Trocadero for lunch perhaps, Madam Tussauds, the walk down The Mall up to Buck Pal to time with changing of the guards, London Eye then walk over Westminster Bridge and stand under Big Ben and wait for it to chime (my boys love that, especially as one of my sons is called Ben!), Sherlock Holmes Museum, V&A, St. Paul's Cathedral (always wanted to visit the Whispering Gallery), No. 10 Downing Street (just so I can give good ol' Tony the finger ), site of Pudding Lane where the fire of London started, a walk through St. James' Park, Bank of England Museum, Harrods (especially handbag department, food hall & fine jewellery), Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason for afternoon tea, Burlington Arcade, jewellery shopping down Bond Street (sorry I just went off in a world of my own there for a minute). Loads of things to do and that's just in London.

What about a day out in Brighton including the Lanes (focus D D, focus), one last trip to Scotland (we go every year to a place just north of Dores by Loch Ness), visit my best mate who lives in Laupen, Switzerland, visit brother-in-law in Amsterdam, Wookey Hole & Cheddar Gorge, Matlock Bath, The Lakes, Great Yarmouth (well probably not so great now but we spent our family holidays there when we were young and had a whale of a time). My I have gone on a bit but it's made me realise how much there is to catch up on. Mind you it's not as if we're never going to see these places again, just that it's going to be a while until we do.

So much to see, so little time......

The children are 15 12 9 7 and we have lived in the south east all our lives.

We never took the children when they were younger because we were concerned about the terrorist threats from the IRA, why expose them to the risk unneccessarily when there were plently of other places to visit suitable for children.

Later on all our weekends got taken up with kids clubs/activities etc.

And if we did have a spare weekend we would prefer to go walking etc in the brecons or snowdonia.

Perhaps because we live so close, we are more affected by life in the City. Our opinions and views of London are somewhat tarnished by the slums, rubbish, overcrowding and social problems it suffers.

Kids...I would take them to the London Aquarium....it's awesome.

remember and give the kids some 'balloons' filled with purple flour before visiting the house of parliament. The police there love a joke, and bail doesn't cost that much

If the weather's ok take the open top tour bus. Then once you've done the lap (resting your feet) you can visit the places everyone thinks they'd find the most interesting.

Agree it's not cheap - a London day out- but try Hyde Park - Regents Park - London Zoo.

Don't forget your camera!!

Agree that Tate Modern is excellent - and good for kids, surprisingly. (not babies & todlers though) The restaurant food is also modern and very tasty - nice wine too!

I can highly recommend Chitty Bang Bang, I think it is one of the best stage shows on at the moment and your kids will love it. The car actually flies!- well it looks like it does anyway. It is quite pricey though, I think around 30 pounds each ticket.

The Natural History Museum gets my vote. I loveeee that place, the animals have never been changed since I was a kid and it is great to go back there. The mechanical dinosaur display is brill and it is free to get in now.

The Natural History Museum is also my favourite building. You can stand and study it for hours and it is so intricate.

Does anyone remember that Autistic boy who drew those amazing pictures of it when he was about 9?

A tip before you leave London is to buy a couple of tourist books on London or England from one of the shops. I bought some great books from the Tower and I have sat and looked at them a few times to remind myself of all the places I used to live near.
It would be quite hard to get the same books out here.

They don't consider themselves Brits, and they are not.
