EMOs

You learn a lot on BE. Before this morning I didn't know what an Emo was and now know it is the collective noun (you know, like a murder of crows) for disaffected teenage youth wearing horizontal striped jumpers, skin tight black denim, Converse All Stars and lashings of black masscara.

Habitat is generally close to fast food outlets, notably Hungry Jacks in Queen Street Mall in Brisbane. Despite location, it appears that most emos actually eat little food. Depsite their skin tight jeans they still, however, manage to show about 6 inches of some cheapo Big W 'sateen' boxer between said jeans and ill fighting T shirts.

Not sure how widely spread they are but also spotted in Perth. May be venomous but have been known to give directions in absence of same advice from local police officers.

An American lady asked me what an 'Emo' was the other day whilst I was on the local lookout. Finally I realised she meant an 'emu'.

Also dyed black hair worn across face making walking difficult, hence sullen expression.

That's one of those things with Roy Hudd's arm attached to its nether regions isn't it? Or was it Rod Hull, always get those two mixed up - one a humorous comedian with a carrer spanning some 30 years and the other a lump on the backside of an emu.

Am i right in thinking Rod Hull died when falling from his own roof whilst trying to improve his TV reception?

Sorry, I seem to be mixing thread topics again....

Americans pronounce emu like e(moo) as in the sound a cow makes. My day to day life is a struggle with this sort of stuff (I have a Canadian accent that has mutated slightly over many years spent abroad). Pastel, elephant and anything said over the phone is met with this

I have considered buying one of those learn English tapes made by an Aussie and practicing for hours each day so at least I'm understood *sigh*.

You'd certainly think he was used to a bad reception after years of that outdated act...

Did Emu (or an Emo) do it?

That show is clearly right up to date if they have a depressive character with black dyed hair sharing their depressing music by sticking one half of their friend's earwax encrusted iPod headphones into their ear.

You're thinking of Elmo! I thought they followed Emo Phelps (Phillips?) who used to whine along on Steve Wright's Radio 1 show; but I'm assured it stands for 'teens displaying unashamed emotion.'

It's actually the first time I've ever come across a teen music genre where I don't recognise even one band!!! .... I'm away to buy some slippers and a cardie while I still can :(
