Electronic visa for holiday

Having booked the trip for step-daughter's mother to come out in December and being told by the travel agent that he would apply for the visa, the tickets arrived and there is no visa. The travel agent said it was an automatic visa and that she wouldn't need a piece of paper/visa stating that.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

She was told that when she enters Oz her passport will automatically flag up the electronic visa

i just checked the FAQS () and saw that you should get a reference number, or your agent should have it
with your passport and ref no. you can then chek if you have a valid ETA visa

And double check that they've spelt her name correctly, as we almost missed our flight a couple of years ago, because the inept staff who issued the ETA, had my OH's name misspelt, and of course it didnt' register. It took about an hour to sort it out.

i would of thought the passport number to be most vital bit, but then i suppose any of the details could be a problem if they're wrong

Also be careful if arranging your own ETA via the website as not all applications are accepted. When I tried to get one for my dad the application was refused (they still take the $20 though!) for unknown reasons and he was flying in about 2 days time! In these circumstances you are advised to call or email Australia House (in London) to get it sorted out but this can take some time.

I ended up getting a friend who works at Singapore Airlines to telex (what is this antiquated technology???) Canberra in the middle of the night Oz time and the ETA was granted within 5 minutes.

My OH's date of birth was wrong on our visa and we couldn't check in  I had to ring Canberra (luckily they had a 24 hour operator on) to sort it out. It only took 5 minutes but it scared me to death.

I wouldn't have cared if he hadn't have had to validate before us, I would have just left him behind.:D

We did this back in Dec 06 for 4 of us and at the time of applying for an ETA there is a page which comes up with your details and your ETA number - it's recommended that you print this off as proof.
