Electrician's mate - advice please
Hi, my hubbie qualified as a sparks in 2004 (16th ed, and inspection and testing). Obviously, he doesn't have enough experience to apply on this so we are applying on his previous employment.
My question relates to when we actually get there (hopefully Brisbane) - as he can't get TRA for 7 years (he didn't do an apprenticeship - studied in evenings at college whilst working as an engineer) does he have to get a job as an electrician's mate?
Any advice on following please:
Emma

Any advice on following please:
- Will he have to go back to college?
- How long will he have to go back to college for?
- Can he go to college whilst working?
- Can he work as an electrician's mate?
- How much does this pay?
- How long until he can get licensed?
- When licensed how much do sparks earn?

My OH is in the same boat, he qualified as an eletrician in the UK in 2005, just as we left so he cannot get his licence or TRA or ANYTHING.
The only way he can do it (after months of phoning round and going in circles we found out!) is sign up as an apprentice, then do an assessment which will work out how much TAFE he needs to complete.
He has been working as an apprentice since October 2006. TAFE went back three weeks ago but as yet we are none the wiser on anything as his useless apprentice company still has not told him when he has to attend or even when he can do this assessment.
As soon as I find out I will update this for you, but otherwise we are still stuck in limbo not knowing what's what.
The wages are crap, which we knew they would be but we are hoping the ends justify the means, but there are some benefits/payments that we may be able to apply for which again I'll update for you once we know more. As a mature apprentice (my OH is 36 and did the same as yours, college at night school whilst working as an engineer!) he gets $14.50 an hour, which is more than he should as the company agreed to pay him a bit more, initially they were talking $12 an hour.

Re: Electrician's mate - advice please
Hi folks... this is my first post on this site.
What I would suggest is that first of all, .. Go for an Open ACA cabling licence. This will then open up many paths in the Data Cabling and Electronic Security Industries. There is great demand for this type of work in Aus and pays as much $ as a qualified electrician with very good career prospects.
Cheers,
Tox
