Electrican licence??
Any electricians out there????
My hubbie is an electrician but only qualified in 2004, however he started working as a trainee in 2002 whilst he attended night school (no formal apprenticeship).
We should get our visa in a few weeks (he used to be a toolmaker so we applied under this occupation).
I understand that to get an ARTC he will need 7 years experience and I have a couple of questions: -
1) does the 7 years start from 2002 when he started working or 2004 when he qualified?
2) Once you get an ARTC is it a simple process to get a licence or do you need to go back to college/apprentice status?
3) can you get the ARTC from the UK?
4) If we stay in the UK until he has seven years would a successful TRA help with getting the ARTC?
5) Should we stay in the UK until he has seven years (i.e. 2009) or is it possible to get his skills assessed once he gets over there with less experience?
Sorry for all the questions, but I've spent ages reading through teh websites and still don't really understand the process!

I understand that to get an ARTC he will need 7 years experience and I have a couple of questions: -
not nessessarly if you can prove formal training ( dosnt have to be apprentiship ) you need to have worked in the trade for the past 18 months of the last two years --- as your case will be to the wire ( no pun intended ) you may be better off using a agent who specialises with tra / artc s applications -- they will know the rules inside out
1) does the 7 years start from 2002 when he started working or 2004 when he qualified?
from 2002
2) Once you get an ARTC is it a simple process to get a licence or do you need to go back to college/apprentice status?
depend on where you intend to migrate too ( which state )
3) can you get the ARTC from the UK?
yes you can apply fro the uk but the artc can only be sent to an aussie address ( use a mates )
4) If we stay in the UK until he has seven years would a successful TRA help with getting the ARTC?
personally i`d try now
5) Should we stay in the UK until he has seven years (i.e. 2009) or is it possible to get his skills assessed once he gets over there with less experience?
ditto (4)

To be honest Steve I'm not too sure. The TRA are introducing a new system soon so everything could change in the next few months. Will have to wait and see.

Re: Electrican licence??
I think in this situation, it could prove difficult to obtain a licence. I'd guess that the OP's hubby would need to do a course for a couple of years.
We move Next Saturday

Cheers Stevo
We are thinking of going to Brisbane. We have instructed an agent for the VISA but they said to wait for the TRA - do you think its worth apply now then? I thought we would need to wait until 2009?

What kind of changes are thinking of bringing in? Doing another two year course doesn't sound like fun, esp if he's not earning any money!!!

Re: Electrican licence??
Where you say he was a trainee, does that mean he worked with a qualified electrician during the day?
What qualification has he got? is it City and Guilds?
