Electrical Goods
 

What are people intending to do about electrical goods.
I've heard they are more expensive in Australia.
I've been thinking it would make it a lot easier to move out to Oz if I flogged them over here, but then wouldn't it cost me a small fortune to replace them when I get there?

By electrical goods, I mean everything from the TV/Hi-Fi/computer to the fridge!

Just my own plan but.....

All IT Kit (servers, networking, PC's, printers etc) - Going

All HiFi - Going

TV/Video DVD - Selling: UK PAL-I not generally compatible with OZ version of PAL (B/G I think). Some may work, some may be adapted some will be scrap - easier to sell here and buy new/secondhand - have a look at ebay.com.au for an idea of prices to get started with.

White Goods - Don't know yet, if they were standard items Id say not worth the bother but the washer, dryer and fridge are all big american kit which will cost arm + leg to replace.

All other small electrical, power tools etc - Going.

Gardening kit - Another area I'm not sure of yet. Instinct is to take it but don't know if I can face the cleaning needed to satisfy Oz customs, terrified of large fine + hold up if they find single green mark on hedge trimmer etc.

Hi Ricky,

If you are going to get a container (seafreight) to send some of your
things, then bring them all!

Just take note:
* For all electricals
Make sure that they can take 240 Volts / 50 Hz

* For TVs and Video players/recorders
Make sure that they are multi-system

* For DVD players
Make sure they are multi-code

TVs, home theatre systems, fridges, washing machines/dryers, digital
cameras, video cameras, computers and printer inks are more expensive here
than Singapore (where I came from).

DVD players here cost about the same.

We did not bring gardening stuffs because we did not want any trouble with
AQIS. Same with the vacuum cleaner. I was told that there should not be
any problems if we clean them properly (no soil, take out vacuum bag, etc).

Thanks for the info on taking electrical goods.
Looks like I'll have to look into frieght charges!
These costs all add up big time.

I think I'll pass on the Gardening stuff. Mines all rubbish anyway. but the hover might be worth cleaning out.

get your DVD player "unlocked" (then can play any zone of DVD). Take Front Loader Washing machines as they cost an arm and a leg over here, but Top Loaders are cheap as chips ($500). Bin your fridges & freezers (unless you want to use them as Bar fridges.

i took our Sony TV over, plugged it into an Australian Video player, and it works fine. Video players, no problems either. You will spend the first 2 days of life down here re-wiring plugs - be prepared.

i even got our cordless telephone to work down here (to give you an idea to the technological "advances" in australia, took it into the equivalent of Currys, and had an arguement with a Customer Service Guy who was adamant I had a mobile phone, not a cordless.)

to be honest, everything works down here. just get the DVD player unlocked, and you will save yourself a heap !

The Australian TV audio uses the German system which is not the same as the
UK.

Tuners with stereo sound will be mono sound in Australia. NZ uses the same
system as the UK.

Australia and NZ DVD's are region 4 but region 1 are also available,
players need to be set up for multi-region.

Telephones connected to the network should be Austel approved if you want to
be legal.
