Eldery parents-airfares/insurance
 

Has anyone had their elderly parents over for a holiday? My Dad is 73 and Mum is 67, I would love it if they came over but Dad is really worried out travel insurance (been able to get it). Dad suffers with gout and arthritis and Mum has a history of arthritis and angina. Anyone else been in this postion, know any good airlines for them to travel with and in particular, insurance companies ?

It would be the opportunity of a lifetime for them, if only they could make it work.

My nan is travelling as we speak. Mum and Nan arrive tomorrow morning into Melbourne. Can you tell I am excited!! Back to the point. Nan is 73 and they took insurance through the travel agent www.austravel.com and had no problems. She also suffers from high blood pressure.

I will let you know how she got on with Malaysian Airlines it is her first flight ever.

I have had my father-in-law (75) over for a few months. Didn’t bother with the travel insurance, but he got a medicare card on arrival to help with refill prescriptions etc.

My experience of travel insurance hasn’t been great and there always seems to be some obvious get out clause which you fail to spot when you take it out.

Hi surfdude In have my elderly inlaws here with me at the moment they are 75 and 73 respectively they flew out with Singapore airlines as they could get a flight directly from Manchester (change at Singapore) they didnt have to worry about luggage as it went on at Manchester and came off at Melbourne the service was great and only had a 2hr wait at Singapore.
My MIL suffered with a stroke last year and they have had no trouble with travel insurance They got this through their travel agent.When I enquired about insurance over here ther are a few companies over here that specialise in Insurance for people over 65 I went onto google nd just typed in Travel insurance 65 and over and the list was endless.Tell them not to worry as it is easily arranged .

Great info, many thanks, they would be flying from Manchester so very useful. I'm sorry to be stupid but doesn't their travel insurance cover them for health costs whilst on their 'holiday' ?

Sorry, I know I appear thick but how does a tourist get a Medicare card ? :rolleyes:

Just to clarify when I enquired about travel insurance for them from Australia
before thay had arranged their own there were plenty of companies over here that specialised in travel insurance for the over 65 year olds just incase it wasnt possible or too expensive in the UK.
Hope that makes sense

You just go to a Medicare office and fill out the form. ;)

A retired tourist would get one no problem as it is part of the usual reciprocal cover between (civilised) countries.

Didn't realise you could either, though there is a reciporcal agreement anyway. But still, I looked on the medicare website and there's a section for UK visitors to OZ, it does say you may need to show a valid visa so I'm not quite sure how it works :confused:

Just an update. Mum and Nan arrived safely yesterday morning. Nan could not praise Malyasian airlines. She was not too fussed on the planes food (but to be fair who ever is really impressed and she is used to a meat and two veg meal anyway). She enjoyed the continental breakfast though.

She said the staff were wonderful and they used the Premier Lounge at KL aiport where they had a 5 hour stopover where for 12 quid they got as much as they wanted tea/coffee/soft drinks/beer/cold snacks/hot food

tv with movies, internet access comfy seats, a shower with toiletries and towels provided, and the staff member on the desk watch the large pieces of hand luggage while they went around the shops.

Mum said it is not easy to find but Airport Info assist in providing directions.

Anyway best go get on with planning the rest of their visit.
