El Nino Over - Rain on the way?????
We've been led to believe (rightly or wrongly) that the severe drought conditions suffered in Queensland in recent times has been attributed to the 'El Nino' weather pattern -> something to do with changes in atmospheric pressure over the Pacific Ocean.
At the risk of looking foolish for swallowing some old wives' tale, I did some research and came across this article on t'internet which states that the El Nino is now over:
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...02-953,00.html
Is the general view (amongst Queenslanders and Brisbanites) that the drought is now over and everybody will soon be 'singing in the rain'?
Or is this a load of claptrap meaning that we'll have to put our plans for a 4x2 with in-ground pool on hold for a while?!
Just wondered whether there was a general feeling of optimism that the worst was over, or are you preparing yourselves for La Nina?
Cheers

Excerpt from another article expands a bit more ....
"While the end of the El Nino would normally be associated with a return to more normal rainfall patterns, it should not be seen as a precursor to drought-breaking rains," it said.
"This particularly applies to water supplies in parts of eastern and southern Australia, which in some instances require several years of healthy rainfalls to recover to a satisfactory level.
"Nonetheless, we can be cautiously optimistic that there will be a general easing of dry conditions in drought-affected areas over the next one to two seasons."

Well, after some eight years of drought here, it's been raining virtually every day these last few weeks. And hard! Make of it what you will.

Well to continue with wives tales, folk law etc ....
We were in Riverlands a few weeks ago and we're told that in a drought year/period Kangaroos and Emus slow down their breeding (makes sense) but for last month or so local people have noticed increase in breeding in both which they're stating means the drought is going to break soon!
I hope it does .... but nice gentle rain over a few days at a time please, 2 inchs in one go results in wet dining room walls and floor!

Yep the weather goes in cycles, the droughts are nothing new.
We are running out of water due to piss poor management, how many people move to SEQ every year? No new water infrastructure built in the last 10 or 20 years and they get surprised when the water runs out

What about these "Brisbane's going to Level 5 then Level 6 water restrictions" stories??
Fact?
Fiction?
Scaremongering by mischevious types in the North?

Level 5 restrictions details are being officially announced in ten minutes.
I heard it will include no car washing (except glass and numberplates).
outside bucket watering reduced to only in the morning period on designated day.
Restricted to 140 l/day per person. Houses using more than 800 l/day will be audited (i.e. if you have 7 people you will be ok, otherwise in trouble)
Cheers,

One for people building a new pool.
What do spa owners do, the water needs to be replaced every few months. I am now glad we got our water tank!
• Swimming Pools & Spas.
All new pools and outdoor spas must now be filled from non-potable sources or from supplies outside the drought affected area. No town water can be used.

Plenty of rain in Northern WA today due to the cyclone. At least one of workers from our rail camp has been killed and 20 injured. I don't know why they did not evacuate, they had plenty of warning. Management are running round the office like headless chickens. I think someone f**ked up.
