Default Education for my Lovely Daughter

Being a Tradie or Artisan and attended the Uni of life i am not very in tune with the education system here let alone in Australia.

Would somebody be kind enough please to explain,

My eight year old is in year 3 here in the UK ie eight years old and obviously is coming to the end of year 3.
When we emigrate we intend to try and get settled before the start of the Australian new term ie January. What year will my little one be going into?
I thought i read somewhere on the board that effectively she would enter the AUS year 3? and basically recover what has been achieved thus far in the UK.

Sorry it may be an obvious question to most but i don't have a clue

Thanks in Advance

I think that possibly Year 3 will be correct. Don't worry about her going over work again, the curriculum there is bound to be a bit different. Researchers reckon that children go back 6 months educationally when they move schools and being in year 3 again could possibly be a good move. It could help her confidence if they are going over something she has already covered and the other kids will think she's great and clever.

Thanks for that,

I agree with the confidence thing, she is quite looking forward to going back into year 3 and quietly knowing the answers
I just wish we new enough about where we are going to live so we could do some real research on local schools.

I have never looked here in the UK at the "league tables" just lucky where we live we have decent schools but does Australia have tables for comparison?

Fanks again

I have a link to the school pages somewhere. I will have a look for it and mail it to you. But the school system is very good in Aus (well it is in Adelaide) my boys fitted within a few days. The system is a little different it appears to be based on fun and learning not tables (some real funny ideas in Aus):~)
Generally speaking schools at the pre year 7 / High pre high school are the same as the UK if not a little higher in expectation. The fun starts when your little darlings want to go to a high school that specialises in (Cricket bless him) and IT. Then you can end up travelling a little way. Back to the subject anyway some schools have joint years i.e. 1&2 (3&4 your Childs years) 5&6 and 7. Which we found a good thing because it gave each child extra goals. Oh and don't forget if you send them to normal state school you pay about $540.00 PA in SA not sure about other states. Private schools run from about $2500 to $15000 PA Normally religious and in the main catholic. The News normally run tables on the private schools and the site is pretty good for research on cars, houses etc

Hope this helps

Hi there,
I currently teach Year 6 in a Junior school here in Blighty. As a professional I would really recommend that you don't go by the league tables if they are silly enough to produce them like us. Trust me, they might only be showing you which schools are good at getting kids to pass tests, or at best they only paint a very faint picture. Trust your instincts and have a good look round a few. Talk to the staff and children and think about what is important for your daughter's progress.
The Queensland government website has links to schools sites and so you could find out more there:
http://www.qld.gov.au/services_for_q...ols.html?ref=s
Don't forget, that unless I am mistaken Aussie kids don't start school quite as early as ours (although this varies from state to state) so yes, your daughter might be slightly ahead. Their curriculum subjects are slighty different so she'll be learning new things as well. Your daughter will take time to settle and make new friends which is just as important as the pen and paper stuff! She'll do fine, kids are so brilliant at adapting. She'll be such a novelty to her new class mates, they'll all want to get to know her.
Hope this helps,
CAZ

It will depend on her Birthday, she may go into year 4 or 5, depending on when she turns 9
.
One basic rule in QLD is currently "To be enrolled in Year 1 in January, children must be five years old by the end of the previous year"
Therefore :
A child aged 5 before Dec 31 will go into year 1
A child aged 8 before Dec 31 will go into year 4
A child aged 9 before Dec 31 will go into year 5

eg: My daughter turned 9 last month and will be in year 5 next year.
