Default ED Nurse and teacher move to brisbane

Hi all

I'm looking for further information generally on Brisbane and cost of living etc.

I'm a emergency department nurse with nurse practitioner and prescribing qualification and would be looking to work in an emergency department.

I'm aware teacher posts are hard to come by for expats and my husband would be willing to do any sort of work.

Thanks in advance

Jamie

Others will be along soon with up to date info but a couple of quick points;
1. Your qualifications need to be assessed by, I think ARPHA , to confirm you are able to practice in Oz. have you looked into this?
2. Do you qualify for any visa? Have you looked at all the various visa options on the Oz immigration site?

With a bit more info, you will get better and more relevant information.

I would need approving by the nursing board and would either look for sponsorship or a working visa.

There is information on getting registered on the nursing section - Nurses, Doctors, and other Medical/Healthcare occupations - British Expats . To register with AHPRA you do need to be degree qualified I think.

There is also info in the immi section that makes you aware that anyone looking to be registered needs to present in Australia within 3 months.

Can I ask why Brisbane? Not sure what opportunities exist within nursing in QLD, but I would think that Brisbane will be harder to come by in comparison with more regional areas. There is one member who works in recruitment and posts vacancies regularly but he's not posted nursing ones recently. Jobs section is here - Australia Jobs - British Expats If you are looking to make a permanent move to Australia, you may be better looking at permanent visas. For this you will need a skills assessment from ANMAC, and meet the other criteria for a visa.

Yes, you'd need an ANMAC assessment before applying for the visa, then you register with AHPRA.
Beware, AHPRA are hanging their requirements constantly. The latest confirmed change is that you must present yourself in person within three months of getting a registration in principle - so you can apply to register from the UK but must visit an Aus office within 3 months of being approved. There are also unconfirmed rumour of not being able to complete registration without a job, so keep your eyes open for changes.

If you qualify for a 189 - skilled independent visa - thats the best to go for as you are not tied to an employer at all. There are job openings in Brisbane for nurses in all areas still, but there's also plenty of local competition. Be prepared to take agency work for a while if necessary, there's lots of that about. However its worth contacting hospitals directly, some will wait for the right person to get here.

Aww thankyou for your message. It was starting to put me off with people saying there are no jobs etc.

I have emailed a couple of hospitals directly and will await their response.

It is tougher than it used to be, but there are stil jobs out there. Teaching is probably harder to break into as there are an awful lot of unemployed graduate teachers around. More likely to score teaching roles outside of Brisbane/Gold Coast area, to be honest. Nursing jobs are possible anywhere

He isn't bothered about continuing in teaching and would happily do any job.

As for teaching, is he primary or secondary? But as others have said it will be very difficult to break in, especially from overseas. Not just competition from unemployed graduates floating around, but all the teachers in the regions who want to transfer into Brisbane, and I believe (but I am unsure - others please confirm) Queensland still uses a points system where a teacher who has been Outback has priority into a Brisbane school over a new hire. Traditionally new teachers in Australia had to "go remote" for a year or two before getting a more plum assignment.

All that being said - the ultimate barometer of his ability to find employment as a teacher, is the question of, is he any good?

He may have more success teaching English privately etc. You alluded to him not being wedded to teaching - it could be an idea to explore those other options.

Also a four year degree is required to teach in Australia now so they need to check the requirements.

Hi Jamie,

I would also check with AHPRA your prescribing status. I too prescribe in the UK but it is not recognised in Australia. You need to complete the autonomous practitioner MSc to prescribe in Australia so you might need to complete a few modules out there. That is assuming you get a nurse practitioner role too as by my understanding you need to MSc to get the post in the first place. I signed up for job alerts here https://www.health.qld.gov.au/employment/job-search and had emails most days with nursing vacancies. Eventually I got the email with the job I wanted in it!

Good luck

What job did you hold out for?

Did they sponsor you to go over as this is what I'd be looking for more than anything to secure some work for me.

Hi Jamie,

I am a respiratory clinical nurse specialist (NHS band 7). I have a job on the sunshine coast starting April 10th doing exactly the same as the role I have in the UK.

I looked at the 189/190 visa option but at the time I only had 55 points assuming I got full IELTS points. My age (48) scored zero points and that is what hampered me! I have however asked for and secured sponsorship (457) which is a temporary visa (4 years). There are down sides to the 457 such as being tied to my employer for the duration but it got me a visa that also allows my wife to work in Australia. I can get an extra 10 points after I have worked in Australia for a year (5 for 12 months work and 5 for my employer supporting my 190 visa application) so this will give me residency. You need to apply for residency before you are 50! I plan to apply for the 190 next year assuming we settle at stay in Australia.

Awwww I'm really glad it's all worked out.

I wouldn't mind being tied to an employer I just couldn't cope with doing all agency as that's what a lot of people appear to be doing.

I'm going to sign up to the job alerts, I've also emailed a few hospitals directly who have al been very helpful.

The cost of living scares me to death also!!!

But remember, when you are being paid in Aus $ the cost of living is nowhere near as grim! As a general guide I am told whatever you spend monthly in sterling then double it and call it dollars for a close price comparison. So if you earn £10,000 per year then $20,000 Aus is equivalent. No idea how accurate this is but I am about to find out
