Thumbs up Economy given tick of approval

An international credit ratings agency has expressed confidence the Federal Government will maintain its discipline on spending in the run-up to the next election.

Ratings agency Standard & Poor's has today affirmed Australia's AAA sovereign credit rating.

It says Australia has a solid financial profile and a competitive economy after past structural reforms.

The ratings agency remains concerned at the high level of debt owed by Australian companies to foreign creditors.

But it says Australia has one of the best government budget positions in the world.
