They booted every team out of the competition and made them reapply. Each city gets one team. The OFC has now given approval for Australia to join Asia.

I thought Perth Glory went bust years ago.... but now I`ve just been to their website so they are back... amazing. Any idea how much tickets are to the home games???

About time we joined Asia. If FIFA had decent rules we wouldn`t have to leave Oceania, but we`ll never get anywhere having to play the 3rd placed South American team every 4 years.

What alternatives do you suggest? An automatic place for Oceania cannot be justified when you look at the depth of the sport in the region. Beating NZ IMO is not enough to justify a world cup place.

Perth have been getting to the grand final a few times in the last few years.

Well, if places like Iran, Korea and Japan can get in......

Aus v Argentina, Brazil or Columbia is always going to end up with 5 South American teams going through.

I don`t know why USA get it so easy either... they`re not exactly a great team (on par with Aus imo), but FIFA are more in love with them, so they get to go through after beating places like Canada, Trinidad, Jamaica and St Kitts. USA & Mexico are always going to go through, and you don`t see their group winner having to play Argentina etc for a place.

North America:

Oceania:
"Oceania has only half a berth at the World Cup. The winner of the Oceania qualifying competition will have to play off over two legs against the fifth-place team from South America to win a place in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany."
http://www.mapsofworld.com/2006-fifa...nian-zone.html

South America:
"All 10 teams in the group play each other home and away and the top 4 teams qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in Germany. The fifth placed team goes through to a two-leg home and away play-off against the top team from the Oceania group for a place at World Cup 2006."

Africa:
"The teams in each group play each other home and away with the five group winners qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in Germany."
http://www.mapsofworld.com/2006-fifa...ican-zone.html

Asia:
"Asia has 4.5 berths at the 2006 World Cup. The eight winners of the preliminary groups of four teams advance to the final round of qualifying matches. The top two teams in each four-team final round group qualify automatically for World Cup 2006. The two third-place teams meet in a home and away play-off to decide who will face the fourth-place team from the North America, Central America and the Caribbean Zone in a two-leg play-off with the winner qualifying for the World Cup."

Europe:

So basically everyone else has umpteen places in the world cup, and we have half a place..... made into a full one if we beat the 5th-placed South American team. Bollocks. Jamaica can get in but Aus can`t.... sheesh.

Concacaf does seem a bit easy but if Australia could beat Iran over 2 legs then they would have qualified. In Europe qualification is tough and every world cup one of the top teams doesn't go through. Australia would get fried in the South American Qualifiers. They were beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Uruguay. Uruguay flopped in the World Cup. Yep it was an intimidating atmosphere but that is football. IMO Oceania does not deserver a whole spot to give to Australia every 4 years. It would not be right.

I think Concacaf is so easy to give the US a chance and bring in the associated marketing dollars. Not right but Oz's 20 million population doesn't bring in the bucks to FIFA. The Asian route is as good as it gets and if they cannot qualify through that then the Socceroos do not deserve a world cup spot.
