DVD Camcorder... advice needed please

I've just checked my sainsburys reward points and found I have nearly £300... I can spend this in Arogs... so I need some advice...

I want to buy a dvd camcorder thiongy... so we can record the kids/ australia etc and send home dvds to the parents to make things a little easier? Things like live birthday/ christmas cards that they can put on and have a bloody good cry after the queens speech on christmas day whilst we spend the day huddled round the air conditioner eating the full christmas monty......

I know NOTHING about dvds... so a few questions...

Do I have to buy one here so it records in a format that they can play here in the uk?

Should I be taking large supplies of blank uk region dvds if I do this? what about cd mail boxes, are they readily available?

Is there a resonable (idiot proof - put that wheelbarrow down dear you know you're not technically minded) one in the argos selection?

Has anyone else done this?

All help gratefully received...

I know I'll have to pay duty as its less than a year old.... but I think its a worthwhile investment...

comments please?

Take it out the box and pretend its 2 years old! How will they know?

Ive flown dozens of times with cameras and camcorders and nobody has bothered about them. As all tourists carry them.

Buy a hard disk camcorder. The DVD ones produce file types (.ifo and.vob for the techies) which are incompatible with commonly available editing software in my experience.

Too right the flipping things are useless if you want to do any editing.
however if you film a fa,ily event and want to send it home with out the frills of digi editing they are very convenient.

We have shipped our UK camcorder, but want to buy an oz camcorder. But we have a UK PC would the Oz camcorder work on the UK PC???? ditto as above for transferring the video to DVD to send stuff back to family in the UK.

Hi there
We have just got a JVC camcorder with a 30GB hardrive on it. The footage can be loaded on to your pc and sent to the uk when you get out there via email attatchment or put on a DVD and sent by post, this is why we brought it.
You don't need to bother with any tapes or anything I think its fab.
