Driving licence and teenagers
Hi everyone
Daughter is 17 end April. We are planning to go to Oz beginning of July. Is there any point in her taking her theory and practical tests here? Or will it be easier to transfer full driving licence when we get there? Also does anyone know if the age you can start driving is 16?
Any advice gratefully received

I think the UK test is harder, but that means the learner will be a better driver ?
Are new UK licences still valid to age 70 ?

You cannot take the practical test until you are 17, which is when you get your full licence. However you are probationary for 2 years which means you have to drive on 'P' plates which come with various restrictions on speed and alcohol limits. You go from one colour 'P' (red?) to another colour 'P' (green?) after one year with another theory test involved somewhere on the way.
After two years on 'P''s you can throw them away! It is a very regimented system with log books and signatures involved and my husband (who has a pilots licence) reckons it's almost as bad as learning to fly. Though, to be honest, anything that gives young drivers a better chance of survival is a good thing.
I doubt if the RTA will swap a limited experience UK licence holder
for a full NSW license. Your daughter will probably have to drive on 'P's for a while, if you're in NSW.

I don't think QLD has P plates, at least I never see any. ?
They still have a Provisonal Licence though, for between 1 and 3 years depending on age.
If you are:
under 23 years of age - provisional licence for at least three years
at least 23 years but not 24 years of age - provisional licence for at least two years
24 years of age and above - provisional licence for at least one year

When I was 17 I laughed at the date printed on it when I would have to get the doc's permission to drive ... it doesn't seem so ludicrously far away in the future any more

No P plates, kids with wheels and no warning on them:scared: But I have heard its coming back in? I hope so anyway, we've been through this teen driving thing and half of them are nutters, they think they will live forever.
