Driving in Holland on an Aussie licence?

Hi folks,

Has anybody out there had any experience of driving in Holland with an Aussie licence? Does one need an IDP as well, or can you just hire cars etc using your State issues one?

Cheers,

S

Hi there Swerv. you need an IDP just to be safe.... UK accepts ozzie driving licenses as does Holland, and mos of Europe, but an IDP doesnt cost much so contact your RACQ and get further info from them to satisfy your needs, enjoy your vacation

The missus is heading home (Holland) for 6 1/2 weeks in June, and I'll be heading that way mid July for 3 1/2 weeks. Oz/Holland/France/UK/Oz

I'm from holland, and I can tell you that an IDP is legally required. Not only that, but you also have to have your passport on you at ALL TIMES. If you get stopped by the police and you don't have your passport on you, you get a fine 150 euro which needs to be paid cash or they will inpound your car. This is not a joke.
They might be mild on you for not having an IDP but if they are in a bad mood you will not be allowed to drive anymore and you need to call a friend / family with a dutch driver's license. That said, everyone speaks english and they can no doubt read your license, still : It's illegal to drive on a non-european driver's license without an IDP. They are 10 euro's or something, it's not worth taking the risk.
