Problem with driving is that it cannot be done in one go unless you want to put yourself at risk of microsleeps. The accomodation will then set you back the little you save. Another uncomfortable option but cheap is an overnight coach. If there are 2 driving then it can be done in one go safely. 13 hours of boring countryside.
For prices check out www.quantas.com.au , www.virginblue.com.au , www.travel.com.au .
Greyhound Pioneer, Mc Caffertys and Firefly are the main Sydney Melbourne coach companies.

it may be boring to some but not all, i like the idea of taking l-o-n-g drives in oz, you get to see some of the country and spend some quality time with the family.
when in oz we travelled from brisbane to cape york by 4wd and loved every minute of it.

150km, same as Melbourne. Difference is you get to see the countryside on back roads (and lots of trees) with no long boring stretches of multi lane highway.

Its only about 750km to Melb (less to Shepparton), so it shouldnt take you much more than about 8½ - 9 hrs driving time (allowing for some slow traffic & toilet stops). Add more obviously if you stop for food/scenic attractions etc. I would estimate about an hour less for Shepparton.
Or you could fly & just get it over & done with .
