Default Double Life?

Hi,

Me and my better half are considering emigrating to Oz in a couple of years, but I have a business in the UK that I don’t want to leave behind!

Fortunately, it only requires a couple of months a year in the UK, spread over a number of weeks.

As Oz has higher taxation than in the UK, is it possible to pay tax on my UK earnings at UK rates, rather than Oz rates.

Any assistance in this area would be welcomed.

Regards,

John

There is a 'double Taxation' agreement so you can get tax credits for tax paid in the UK on UK earned income
A lot depends on your circumstances.
I would have though this a subject for specialist advice.

Good luck

Will depend on whether you are UK or Aus resident for tax purposes. I guess that if you are emigrating then you will become an Aus resident for tax purposes and you will pay tax on your global earnings in Aus. It sounds a bit messy as to be non ordinary resident for UK tax you must be be in UK for more than 91 days but as G says you can get relief under double taxation agreement with Aus.

That is assuming you are a sole trader and the business is not a limited company. Different rules if it is

I'd get it checked out with the Inland Revenue and get some good tax advice before you go !!

I'd have to agree with the others - get some professional advice. Search for Alan Collett on these boards. As well as being a migration agent and all-round top bloke (cheque to the usual address Alan ), he knows all about exactly your kind of situation.

Hi,

I don't think I qualify as a cowboy.

I have a computer network design and security consultancy.
I am also involved with lecturing for some IT training companies.

Although the work is not constant, it pays the bills.

Still a cowboy?

Cheers

JD
