I'm going to register a new domain name for my business website, which is currently a .co.uk.

Which is better?

.com

or .com.au?

I was thinking .com as I can accept work from anywhere in the world not just Aus, BUT would I get more work from Aus if I was .com.au?

Some people who use search engines do specify to search with just google.com.au, and therefore get all the .au sites up first.

I'd go with both if you can.

.com.au will rank higher in Australian Google... but .com.au domain names are strictly controlled so that you can only (officially) register one if it is a trading style of your business. E.g. PTY or registered trading name or trade mark.

I can register either BTW.

Then if money-wise you cannot afford both well get the com.au to start with if your business will be mainly in Australia (for google ranking issues)...

ooooh I can answer this ONE !!!

if you get a .com.au you MUST hold a valid ABN

The ABN registrant must closely resemble the domain name.

for example.
If you found out www.sex.com.au was available you couldnt register it, unless you were sexy and held a valid abn relating to sex

.com.au sites get indexed exactly the same as .com however, its easier to get yahoo listed with a .com.au domain than a .com

Country specific DNS is highly regarded by Yahoo.

If you can afford it, get both (as said ^^^^). Otherwise, I tend to search for .au but only because of the $ problem (i.e. with .com I tend to assume that the prices are in US$).
