Doing a little research...

Hi all,

My wife and I are looking to emigrate to Australia.
We're looking at Perth, because it seems to support immigrants a little (lets-perth.com).

I'm a production controller for a pharmaceutical plastic moulding factory and my wife will be a qualified hairdresser in April.

What do you think our chances are of getting a permanent residency?

Thanks,
Chris and Helen.

Re: Doing a little research...

Post to the Immigration forum and you'll get a wider audience and more (but less sensible on occasion) replies.

Have you checked our your scores on the 'point test'. Do it twice, each of you as the main applicant to see what gives the greatest score. Need 115 to pass.

Down load the skilled migration booklet (AUS$10) from www.immi.gov.au - and expect to download it several times as it gets frequently updated. Read it fully and carefully.

Then feel free to ask loads of questions.

If you're not sure about form filling or are complicated in any way, look into hiring an agent.

Good Luck, its a long journey - but exciting hopefully...
Mash...

Mash,

Just one question....

Where can I find the points test you mentioned?

Thanks,
Chris and Helen.

mashiraz Dec 5th 2002 9:19 pm

mmmmm.....you are just starting your research aren't you?!

The points test in in the booklet, but some agents have it on line. Here's some bedtime reading for you:

http://australianz.topcities.com/prgeneral.htm
http://www.australia.org.uk/vti/html/migration.html
http://www.gomatilda.com/home.cfm
http://www.austimmigration.com.au/main.htm
http://www.austimeline.com/index.jsp
http://www.workpermit.com/australia/australia.htm
http://www.liveinaustralia.com/

an on line assessment is in there somewhere.

Let us know what you score and post to the other forum for your next steps. (Its not a quick process, if you've not got family out there it at least a year to get a visa)

Thanks Mash,

I've got the booklet now...
I notice both our jobs are worth 60 points which is pretty good. Also I'm 25 and Helen is 21 so 30 each there.
I'll check the rest out when I can print this at work ;)

Thanks again,
Chris and Helen.

Hi Chris and Helen!

Welcome to the group! Myself and my de facto partner Have applied for PR visa's on the skilled migration route. I am a hairdresser and as such, im on the MODL [ migrant occupations in demand list]l for oz and on the Victorian Government MODL list too! we are planning on going to Melbourne early next year. I think you will find all the states offer help to migrants.

Im not sure how you will be applying, but if you are thinking of applying with Helen being the main applicant, [maybe youve heard about hairdressers being in demand?] you will have problems. With skilled independent, you have to be qualified for 18 months and have worked full time in that occupation for a minimum of 12 months. So if Helen doesn't Qualify till April, you will have to wait 18 mths before applying.

If you check out the websites mention earlier, they will give you all the info you need. If you decide to go ahead with any sort of application, there are many people on this forum that will be able to give you lots of help and support along the way, and also migration agents that give help and advice for free too!

Good luck! hope you can sort something out!

Cheers!

English will gove you 20 points, then the rest come from work experience. If you're wife isn't yet qualified, she may not get points for 12 out of the last 18 months experience, or pass the skills assessment.

Check out occupations in demand though for Melbourne, Victoria. I'm sure I remember them being short of hairdressers!

If you got a State & Territory Nominatied Independant (STNI) that would speed things up for you...and that's where it starts to get complicated.

Look for metropolitan area skills in demand pdf file. Definitely on it.

Happy reading, planning, dreaming. I'm sure you'll make it.

Chris and Helen,

The two aspects you should be aware of are the need for at least the main applicant to obtain a skills assessment from the assessing body that is relevant to the nominated occupation (doesn't have to be the same occupation as that in which you are working currently - eg you could have a Chemistry degree and obtain a skills assessment as a Chemist even if you are now working as (say) a Social Worker) and the need to have recent work experience.

The latter is the aspect that might give you problems if you were to apply with your wife as main applicant given that she is not yet qualified: the work experience needs to be post qualification.

The other practical aspect to be aware of in due course is that in certain States you must have accreditation to be working as a hairdresser (or indeed most of the trade skills).

We'll be delighted to advise more formally if you think you'll need some help with any or all of the above issues.

Best regards.

Kaff,

It doesn't quite work this way - once Helen has worked as a hairdresser for 12 months post qualification (not 18) that would be enough to meet the basic 12/18 months criteria.

Best regards.

poggle Dec 6th 2002 9:04 am

Hi Alan,

Thanks for that! I knew i could rely on you for the correct info! but I thought that 18mths had to have gone by from the qualification date of which you had to have worked for 12 mths within that 18 in that occupation? and that this had something to do with the 'deeming date' too. can you clarify this for me if you get a minute.

Thanks!

Cheers!

Alan Collett Dec 6th 2002 9:13 am

Hello again Kaff.

Given a 136 or 138 skilled application (for example) and a 60 point occupation you need 12 months of work experience in any skilled occupation post deeming date to meet the basic requirement for skilled migration, although this would usually be in the same occupation as that in which you have obtained the skills assessment.

Best regards.

Dear all,

Thanks for all your help!

I guess the best thing we can do is hold off until Helen's been qualified for a year.

In the meantime, we've got lots of research to do!

I'm sure we'll be asking a lot questions in here over the next year or so.

Thanks again,
Chris and Helen.
