Dogs in Brisbane
 

We are emigrating to Brisbane in the near future with our two big dogs. At the moment we walk them in a remote large grassed area, unleashed.

Does anybody know whether we will be able to do this in the North Brisbane area, or whether you can enlighten us on the laws about walking your dogs? :confused:

Dogs have to be walked onleash except for in council provided offleash areas.

Hi, are there many of these offleash areas? What are the areas like, are they parks, or fenced fields? How do other people cope walking larger dogs needing regular exercise. :(

They are usually fenced areas within parks, here is a link to some info about them.

Usually dogs must be on a leash. But if there is a large empy piece of land, you often can find people walking dogs without leash. Sometimes this happens in school ovals, just historically established areas :) It is expected that your darling doesn't interfere with people and doesn't fight with other dogs. Most dog owners will be happy for your "puppy":) to play with theirs. In some remote and empty places you can take the dog on a beach, which is absolutely great. The only officialy designated area is The Spit, near Main Beach on Gold Coast. In other places - if it's far enough for any Inspector to reach you:)

You must have a plastic bag (fne for not having it) and you definetely can't take dog out to the bush in national parks (and virtually all bush is National Park)
There is a few dog-friendly camping areas, though (but still on the leash)

PS for a good excersice you have to walk on a leash A LOT :(
We solved this problem by bying a house near a forest strip, which isn't a park. I recall, in Toowoomba half of a large park is off-leash.
Don't worry, you will always find something not far from house.

Thanks for the info!! :) This was naive, but I did think if all else fails we could excerise them in the bush. Thanks for clearing that up!! Hopfully we will be by a forest strip, as one of my dog's is not obediant. One word from us and he does exactly what he wants:eek:

One thing I have found here in the UK is that you get to know other dog owners, and this was a good way of meeting new people. Maybe this could happen in Oz???

Ian, dog owners over here are very friendly most of the time, have you considered joining a dog obedience club? Plenty around, you get to meet the locals (& so do the dogs! :) ) & you get something worthwhile out of it ie a more obedient dog. If you let me know where in Brisbane you are heading I can let you know the closest club.

As for walking them offlead, sure, you can just go to any park or open area & do it - just dont be surprised when someone taps you on the shoulder & gives you an on-the-spot fine :eek: . There are alot of council dog inspectors around, its very easy to get caught.

Just a warning, if your dog gets into any kind of scrap with another dog (or a person) or anyone makes a complaint your dog can be declared dangerous which can involve anything from huge amounts of money to register your dog/special built fences etc for your yard/must be walked in public with a muzzle, to being put down. Exercising a disobedient dog offlead is not such a good idea :eek:

Exercising in any sort of bush area isnt a good idea either, apart from the fact that dogs arent allowed in National Parks (because even the scent of a dog can disturb many native animals) & can scare native animals in bushland, there is the risk of snakes bite & paralysis tick (both which can easily be fatal).

Dog laws over here are very strict, because of irresponsible dog owners who dont abide by the rules & ruin it for everyone.
