I am wondering, because I am about to be issued my PR visa for NZ next week, can I gain PR in Australia after 2 years, or has this now been abolished.
Just curious! :p |
NZ PR gives you no rights at all in Australia.
After 3 years you can become a NZ citizen (if you are British you will be able to keep British citizenship too). NZ citizens used to be treated as permanent residents in Australia, but new arrivals since Feb 2001 are not, unless they apply for and obtain Aus PR under any of the normal rules. As a NZ citizen, you can still live and work in Australia, but since the Feb 2001 changes to the immigration system you're not treated as a permanent resident for the purpose of a number of things, including: - sponsoring non-NZ citizen relatives to live in Australia - obtaining certain welfare benefits - applying for Australian citizenship - whether an Australian born child will automatically have Australian citizenship by birth.
