Does this affect everyone on every kind of visa and those of us who are already here and only months away from gaining citizenship?

Could you provide a link to the official bumph so I can have a read through?

This is seriously bad news.

I think this wording might be significant:

The proposed change is an increase in the current residency requirement from 2 year to 3 years. Once the legislation has been amended an applicant for Australian citizenship will be required to be present in Australia as a permanent resident for a total of 3 years in the five years before making the application. This includes a period of one year in the two years before the application is made.
Once the legislation has been amended an applicant.... etc. So if you are already an applicant now, or if you are already here, it shouldn't effect you.

Of course I know bugger all about it, so don't take my word for it, or anything.

Eeeee I wish I read it like that ADL....

How I read it is, you can only apply [as an applicant ] for citizenship when you satisfy the criteria, and as I see it...for us that will be at the 3 year mark.

So....in essence the new ruling applies to us already here too ...i.e we can only apply once we've been here 3 years as PR's

PS. I think "applicant" applies to someone applying for citizenship...not the visa

Yes....you are right...this is the Citizenship application, not the visa application

In essence what this is saying is, if your citizenship application has already been lodged before the law has changed, then you can fulfil the 2 year mark.

If your citizenship application has not been lodged before the law has changed, then you have to go to the 3 year mark

The government will not care about us, the only chance is the lower house ask the gov. to amend the legislation to exclude current PR visa holders
