Trying to phrase this so nobody takes offence - I work with a lot of people under 35. Could that be the difference? Or do I just attract weirdos?!

Its possibly a difference between Qland and Victoria, I'm not sure though. Could be something to do with a high percentage of women here going to AFL games.

Qlanders in the 80's were considered very conservative, compared to NSW VIC and even SA and WA. The last lingering remnants of the Joh factor.

There is/was no stronger female movement in Australia, than the traditional, and very conservative Country womens association... Qland branch. With the old figure head of Flo in charge.

Both my Daughters 21 and 23, consider pommy girls of their own age, to be more man/relationship huingry than themselves or the average Aussie girl.

My girlfriend (24) and all her mates regularly head out and get p!ssed. I haven't noticed any difference between the UK girls I knew and the Aussie ones.

However, it may also have something to do with those that go into further education. My gf and her friends are all ex-uni students. But I do know some girls that I have worked with that are definately the house-wife who doesn't go out by the time they are early to mid twenties....

I would agree with this statement. My company has drinks every second Friday and there's a mixture of men and women. Certainly in Melbourne, there is so much going on that sitting in a pub and getting pissed seems a little boring to me so I would think that's probably the only difference

Hi

Funny enough me and the other half were just discussing this issue this morning.

Apart from the Friday drinks thing.. which is great  and very much alive.. the rest isnt so good id say. Most Ozzie girls, tho a bit younger than myself are cetainly up for a laugh & a bevvy, but with the outlook that as soon as they get themselves a man ( a phrase that makes me shudder) they want to get married, have kids etc etc.. and those of their friends who have already done so, only go out for coffees, the odd meal etc.

Im 30 next month and its really starting to scare me.. i dont want to socialise only in couples.. im used to going on weekends away with my pals, fun nights out, even silly nights in and I just dont see that happening here :(

Im in Adelaide, where its not exactly thriving, and hoping to move to Brissie next year for a bit more life.. hopefully?

Strange thread.

So "Freedom" = going out and getting pissed out of your head?

:D No don't think so, more gone off on a tangent a bit. But I think OP was sort of referring back to the old men around the Barbie, women in the kitchen idea that I certainly saw in Perth 20 odd years ago. That has changed IMO

Possibly, I think women in Australia need to be pretty tough and assertive. It is quite a macho society.

Interesting. My experience has been the exact opposite. In Oz, dont think about settling down til late 20s or well into 30s; in UK, get married by time 24.

I'm 34 and have been in pubs on my own here in Adelaide. No one batted an eye.

I'm also planning a trip to either Sydney or Melbourne with my cousin for the beginning of next year, she's 33 and married to a typical Aussie bloke who doesn't mind in the slightest, (my OH is a bit wary about me going though and he's a "new age" english bloke  )

Life is what you make it, wherever you are ;) :)

At BBQs women tend to congregate together, drink 'champagne' and discuss who is running which stall at the coming school fete or inviting each other to tupperware/bookclub etc. Blokes hang around together at the BBQ drinking beer and talking about footie.

Ah, I see where you are coming from. Yes would agree that it's more of a town than a city.

It's one of the things that attracted me, I'm much too old for all that buzzing nightlife kinda thing :o :D
