Does Aus Have ready meals like UK or none like NZ who prepare their own..all weekend!
Does Australian supermarkets have ready meals and if so how do they compare to UK ones. Asked this same quesiton on the NZ website where my husband has got a job (don't know whether to go or not though...me that is) and the replies were rather heated.

uummm...not sure. Maybe go to www.coles.com.au. I can imagine the replies were heated though! Ready Meals aren't the be-all-end-all, are they?

Like me, you'll have to learn to live without - but it's really no hardship, as fresh meat, fruit & veg are excellent quality &, in some cases, a lot cheaper than the UK. Both Coles & Safeway have lots of Asian food options, many of which are quick & easy to prepare. With a bit of shopping around, planning ahead & preparing food for several nights all in one go, one can get by!
Cheers,
Anya.

Even since we have been here(4months) I have seen changes in what is available, for example you can now get ready made mashed potato's, in the veggie section...btw I have never tried it! There are still convenience foods though like fresh pasta with fresh sauces...and the meat counter is full of marinaded meat...we do cook alot more and the fresh food here does taste better...I just think it will take time for ready meals to be available here....and hopefully they will be of the m&s quality rather than just the crap you get at sainsburys etc...I have nothing against ready meals, they are great if you don't have the time..but I am at last learning how to cook! :scared:

Bring your pinny, aussie gals are expected to peel chop cook and bake
Seriously theres not much in the way of ready meals, maybe thats why aussies eat so much take out huge dough and fat laden pizzas for $5, greazy chickens swimming in fat $6, burger chip things literally on every corner in town. Very american diet and very easy to put on a few stone if you adopt it :scared:
Best bit is the asian influence on food, lots of asian take outs and the food has loads of fresh veg in it, a little bit of meat and as long as you dont eat the sauce which is quite oily, or coconut creme based its pretty good.

This link http://www.homeshop.com.au/category....F970496&Page=1 takes you direct to the Frozen meals section.
Example: Mccain Dinner Chicken parmagiana 320g $3.50
or Mccain Shepherds Pie 400g $4.52
Much cheaper to do it yourself

I saw an ad last night for these mc cain meals, but don't buy them meself cos the box tastes better
In the supermarkets you can get ready made lasagnes etc, but they are so stuffed full of crap i don't think i'd give em to my dog.
A fast meal here for us is something like steak, (oven)chips and peas. Takes 15mins or so, quick, simple and everyone will eat it

the problem with ready meals is that for them to taste good, they have to pump them full of artificial flavourings, colours, preservatives, etc. i'd much rather good myself.
in fact, i make my own ready meals. cook enough for a few days, then freeze them. at least you know exactly what goes in them - the wholesome fresh foods, and not the mechanically extracted meats and all the artificial stuff.

Steak and Chips is a common option for us to, nice, quick and cheap
The ready cooked chickens here are very popular, and cheap, but you need to find the right place to get them, some places do cook them much better than others.
We have a local takeaway that does good fish and chips; $10 for the three of us, including a couple of Banana Fritters, and they will do the fish either Battered or Breaded.

In answer to the OPs question, there are some things available, but in general a heck of a lot less than the UK (which IMO is a good thing). It definitely depends on where you shop!
