Depends on their insurance. Someone hit my car in a car park and their insurance paid for me a courtesy car. You will have to ring and ask. Alternatively the people fixing it may have courtesy cars.

Depends if your cover includes it or not.
If it's the other party's fault, you can claim all your expenses back through them, although you'd probably have to pay upfront first.

My insurance didn't provide for a hire car but the other parties did. Mine were not willing to pay for one.

Thanks very much everyone. Yes, they have courtesy cars, but they charge for them, so just trying to work out if they should also be paying for that. After all, if it wasn't for their insured person leaving no gap (geee, unusual hey) and then not stopping, I wouldn't have to pay out any money or miss time off work.

So, I will give their insurance company a call.
Thanks again

When we had our Ute written off in a smash my insurance company [RACQ] wouldn't spring for a rental Ute while we were sorting out the claim. We hired a replacement [like for like] & sent the bill to the other persons insurance for payment. They paid up no problem at all, we hired the Ute for 7 weeks all up.

RACV paid our rental like for like for two weeks till we purchased another car. I assume as it was the other firms fault they charged them.

Yep, I should just clarify RACQ did tell us to claim from the "party at fault" I guess it comes down to who's underwritten the policy as to how far you can push.

We got hit by a QBE insured driver and their policy was they dont give hire cars out so I wrote an e-mail to the whatever department it was at the time and explained that i worked X amount of miles from home and had to pick up kids from school and pick-up wife in the city after an evening shift etc...Added a couple of printed off route planners from the TransPerth website showing bus timetables and what time i would have to leave and basically a big load of speeel explaining how i couldn't do them day to day things without a car.
Would have had to let the kids get picked by strangers, wife would have had to walk through the dark CBD late at night and i wasnt prepared to put my family in danger because of their policy.
It worked a treat and i got a hire car for the full period my car was in hospital getting fixed.
At the end of the day, I wasnt lying about anything and it wasnt my effing fault anyway lol !!!

But the insurance company only pays for what the driver at fault is liable for. If some insurance companies pay then it means that the driver is liable. So if the insurance company doesn't pay then the driver has to pay. Call him up and tell him to fork out or you'll take him to court.

It seems that many insurance companies will cover the cost of a hire car if your car is stolen, but not if you're in an accident. Both events would be equally inconvenient. We have to pay extra for the hire cover cost though so I haven't taken it up - it will probably add up over the long run paying the extra fee, so we'll take our chances and hope nothing happens.

The insurance companies normal policy for providing a hire car to its policy holders does not apply to a claim that the third party makes against them.

The insurer is liable for all your deemed necessary expenses and costs, including reasonable alternative transport, medical bills if appropriate etc.
