Does anyone know about Private Nursing Homes in UK???
Hi Guys
My question is if person Mrs X goes into a private nursing home with certain amount of funds to pay for the care in her name and eventually the funds run out, who then pays for the continued care?
Would they look for husband Mr Y who is not in care and has funds in his sole name.
What happens to funds in joint names?
My Mum is over due in going into a care home as my dad (and sole carer) is reluctant due to the cost. It is inevitable that she will have to go in eventually, is there anything I can suggest on the finance front to help him out.
Thanks in advance.

You can choose whichever home you wish to go into providing you can fund it. Once the funds run out then the state will support you but they may not necessarily be willing to continue to fund the place in the home you have chosen. Your mother should apply for Attendance allowance if she hasn't already.

BIP is correct. There are many documented cases where people have had to move from the home they were in when their funds ran out and the council payments are not enough to cover the cost.
some points to be aware of.
1. If they own a property jointly then they cannot be forced to sell the property to pay for care so long as the partner still lives there. However, the council can take a charge on the half of the property against care home fees , to be paid when the property is eventually sold.
2. Funds held jointly are usually classed as being owned 50% each. for example if they hold say £50,000 then £25,000 is classed as being the care home residents assets.
3. Mr Y's funds , if solely owned, will not be counted as part of Mrs y's assets.
I suggest you look at help the aged website Home and care | Information and advice | Age UK as this gives you much more detail. Gives you all the answers to your questions.

You could also look into a deferred payment arrangement for your mum depending on a financial assessment. This means that your mum/you will have an arrangement with the local Authority to enable her to use the value of the house(If she has one) to pay for care costs.
Speak to your/ mum's local authority as your mum is entitled to a needs assessment under the Care Act.

You are best to look on the Quality Care Commission (ccc.org.uk) website and checking the ratings of care homes in the respective area where X lives. Based on individual circumstances (as mentioned by BIP) X would be entitled to some form of allowance and some, if not all, of the funding would be covered by the local council based on income/ assets held by X.
